My ancestors came from the village of Sam Shui, Guangdon Province, China, where they owned a farm, and were well off. In 1866, the first to migrate to Trinidad was HoHow, also called Apoo, who was christened John Chinapoo, my great grand uncle. He was a gambler, and came as an indentured worker who settled in Tortuga, Trinidad, and was a wealthy man. In around 1900+, he decided to visit his home land, and asked for his nephews to take him there. HoKit On, and Henry Alook were sent, and returned with their Uncle HoHow to settle in Trinidad, Ho Kit On was christened Joseph Awon, and married Alice Alexander. Their children were: Alloy, Austin Awon 1908. (deceased) Chincum, Ann Veronica Awon 1911 (deceased), HoKai, Geoffery Alexander Awon 1912, (deceased), HoLinHong, John Audley David Awon 1914 (deceased), HoTung 1915(deceased), Alimoon, Alma Diamond Teixeira 1916 (deceased), HoYien, Dr. Maxwell Phillip Awon 1920,(deceased) HoQuan, Albert Vernon Awon 1922, Katim, Joseph Awon 1923 (deceased), and HoChat, Dr. Astor Victor Awon 1927. HoKitOn travelled to China on a few occasions. between 1927, and 1934, during which time he built two houses, which were lost by fire. On his first trip back to China, in 1927, HoKitOn took his son HoKai, Geoffery Alexander Awon. After 1934, no one ever heard from either one. Does any part of this story sound familiar to you, if so, please make contact.

Have I met you. My father was Astor Aleong who died December 2000. I know he is related to Chinapoo and I am interested in my ancestry.

Hi Liz,
I have not been on Ancestry.com for many years. I do believe that I have met you. I knew Astor, and Bunny. As a matter of fact, I visited your Dad at the POSGH when he was ailing. I also have an uncle with the same name- Astor, better known as Pouy. He is a dentist - Dr. Astor Victor Awon.
I have been trying for some time to communicate with our relatives in China, but alas it has been fruitless. San Shui, where our relatives originated is no longer a small village, but a city that deals with lots of trade, and I have heard that the Labour Camp is there. You step out of line, and you are lost there forever. Because it is not a tourist attraction, you do not hear much about it in the brochures.
Apart from which, with the many wars that transpired in China, most of our relatives have probably been dispursed all over the world. Our only salvation is getting the DNA match up. It is amazing.
All the best.
AnnV.
