Hi Allaye,

I have just seen your posting about Thompson and connected families. If you can send me a note of your email it will be easier to correspond. I have met your Aunt Desiree and your father in France and his two children that lived there. I have met Desiree and her two daughters in the past. I also have copies of some books by your father and a book about him. I now have a more comprehensive tree about our common ancestors. Please contact me on kcsthompson@gmail.com

Regards,

Chris

Hi! It's a small world and sounds as though we may have relatives in common somewhere. We went to Burma just before Christmas and had a wonderful time, it's a beautiful country with lovely people. We were also lucky enough to find the houses my mum & a cousin's mum grew up in in Rangoon, as they were but very dilapidated now. The girls school is no longer and has been demolished, new buildings underway on the former site. The trip to Burma has certainly helped me make sense of my past.

Hi,
When i read your description of your family, it was almost a mirror image of our family...thru to my paternal army family b/ground. My Mum's name was Constance Sawyer and she did have Rayner cousins, tho I'm not sure of the degree of relationship. She had 3 sisters but we only ever met her sister Rita. Mum's mother's maiden name was Scriven (Miriam). Mum and Rita attended the Diocesan school in Rangoon.
BTW Mum was born in 1909 and she passed away about 8 years ago.
Just wanted to say 'hello'...
Hi Allaye, thank you so much for posting this information and photos on my discussion thread, wonderful to read about and see JFX's grave, impressive headstone and lovely inscription. I wish I had the knowledge and resources to provide more information about our shared ancestry, I am descended from Edward Thompson, JFX and Anna Marias youngest son and my great grandfather, but I am afraid I can only ride on the coattails of those who have taken the time to find things out so far. Hopefully I might be able to devote more time and resources to this in the future and add to the already wonderful amount of information that has been found about the Thompsons. Thanks again for sharing your findings.

Kind regards, Neil

Dear Janis,
Hello. My name is Allaye O’Connor and I am traveling with my son Owen through Burma with the aim of finding out more about our family. JFX Thompson was my great grandfather. I have very sketchy information and part of a family tree drawn out by Christopher Thompson whom I believe to be a cousin of my father, Philip O’Connor. Armed with this information and old family stories we have managed yesterday to locate St Patrick's church in Moulmein, Burma, where JFX was baptised, married and buried. In spite of the run-down state of the cemetery where many gravestones had been defaced and broken by the military, we were delighted to find JFX Thompson's grave still intact. Please find the photos of the grave site uploaded here (http://flic.kr/p/e7rvGN, http://flic.kr/p/e7kBGk, http://flic.kr/p/e7kBFV, http://flic.kr/p/e7rvHs).

We are continuing our search today. Of particular interest to us is Winifred Marie O’Connor (née Thompson) who was my grandmother and whom appears on Christopher's family tree as one of Ida Dawson's children. Four children are listed, Winifred, Philip, James and Charles. We have always felt that Winifred was something of an outcast and had no particular sympathy with her three supposed brothers. There is also a nine year gap between the birth of Winifred and her first brother, Philip. Even more mysterious, her date of birth (1880) falls within the span of JFX’s first marriage to Anna Maria Cowell who died in 1882, probably in childbirth. Winifred is not listed as one of her children with JFX, nor can we find any record of her so far. I wondered if anyone in your family knows anything about her. My suspicion is that she was in fact half Burmese and not a legitimate child of either Anna Maria Cowell or Ida Dawson. There are many family stories that my father heard to substantiate this.

If we can give you any useful leads, then we would be only too happy and will keep you updated on our search.

Thanking you in advance.

Allaye O’Connor
Owen Gothill

My great uncle, Charles D. Ellis,(1874-1932)worked for the Burmese Oil Company. He married Irene Sybil Quatros in 1912 in Rangoon. Prior to their marriage he had a daughter, Sophie, who married Harper Raymond Bennett. They came to the U.S. during World War II and remained here. Charles also probably had a son Cyrus and a daughter Viola. Please contact me if anyone can share information about these people. Thank you.

Hi Janis, thank you for getting in touch, I would love to know anything you can tell me about our shared ancestors, do you have any pictures or know what happened to JFX's other children? Do you now the story of how he came to marry Ida Dawson after Anna-Maria? I assumed Anna-Maria maybe died in childbirth. I really only know about the Thompsons what is on my family tree already, and that was mainly taken from other family trees and the research of my uncle Bill Cullen, you say you met Priscilla? There is a story that Richard Thompson came to Burma from Ireland and may have been a Spring-Rice, part of Irish aristocracy, have you heard any similar rumours in your family?

Looking forward to hearing from you,

regards, Neil Messenger

Dear Pat
I have just seen your thread from back in 2010 about your father George, this morning I was trying to look things up for a dear friend of mine and I found that she shares your family tree. Her grandmother was your fathers sister (Sybil), Sybil died in about 2006 and like you Sharon has wanted answers to her family tree, I have told her about you and she has asked if I would pass on her email to you and maybe you could correspond. Her name is Sharon Bainbridge her mother is Sybils daughter. her email is sharonsjb@gmail.com.
many thanks Elaine

She would very much like to hear from you.

The search for how and why they (our ancestors) were there in the first place is murky though. I'm set to go off to the India Records archive at the British Library in a few weeks time to delve some more.
I hope it's not too late to pick up some contact as I'd love to know more on such an intriguing and mysterious story.
I hope this finds you well
Best Wishes
James

Burma to Uk travel - late 1800's early 1900's

Please be patient when reading this as I have to set the background before I ask the question!

My great grandfather, James Gibb was married to Jane Waddell in Rangoon in 1880 ( I have copies of their marraige record) and had four daughters, two of whom were born in Rangoon ( Isabella Gibb in 1881 and Margaret Gibb in 1884), two of his other daughters were born in Polmont, Scotland (Helen in 1882 and Mary in 1886). I know Isabella and Margaret came back to the UK as I have records for their later life.

At some point after Mary's birth the couple split James and Jane having returned to Scotland.

He then met a Jane Younger, and went back to Burma, having my grandad, also James, born there on 27th September 1901. My great grand mother, Jane Younger (known as Gibb but was never married to him as he had never divorced the other Jane!) and my grandad returned to Scotland sometime between 1901 and 1913 but I cant' narrow that down.

My great grandfather, James Gibb died and was buried in Rangoon ( I have copies of his death/burial record), Burma on 8th June 1912.

HERE IS MY PROBLEM: I can find no record of any of them returning to the UK, or indeed any record of any of them going to Burma.

There are many ship journeys that must have been involved in this story and I find it strange that I can not locate ONE ships log for any of them, even those carried out after 1890.

I have posted a query on this site once before and many of you were very helpful, so does anyone know if ships logs for this area exist? What ships took the route? or if not could anyone suggest where I write, or enquire to see if i can get this information?

This whole story has developed from research online about the family, as my own close family never knew that a) my great grandad had not married my grandads mother, or b) that he had infact been married to someone else, and had four girls to them!!!

Families.....who would have them?

All the best

Andy
I believe my great granddad had the surname Chill. I don't know his first name but he was a policeman and married a Mon (tribe in Burma) woman and had a son named Edwin who was a doctor. I am unaware of any connections to the Towers name but the name Chill can't be very common. Especially in Burma. I can ask my dad though. My dad is in his mid 60s so I'm not sure how much he'll know of much older relations

My husbands grandmother was call Sybil Maude Ragh, born in Rangoon (as far as we know) around 1904. She married Cyril Cann in 1921. She had 2 sisters Ellen & Margaret (Trixie & Babs)who stayed in Burma. Don't have anything any further back. Family rumour has it that they came from England originally and were called Roberts. There may also be a connection to a diamond mine in Burma. Cyril was a widower when married, so any link to his first marraige would be good, he was a policeman then in the army.
