I am trying to find the parents of Neil Benjamin SAVAGE born abt 1816, I believe in Burma, his son, Archibald Benjamin SAVAGE was born in 1843 in Kyauk Phyu, Akyab in the Arakan district along with his siblings including Willoughby SAVAGE, Cecilia Henrietta, Agnes Rose and Rosewell.

At some point some of the family move to Pegu and Rangoon where my Grandmother, Iris Alice was born around 1908. The family left Burma with the evacuation of Rangoon in 1942 and arrived in Australia in 1946 after the war.

Any help with researching family history in the Arakan district will be very much appreciated.

Hello there,

I was just searching for information regarding the Smart Family from Kamayut and came across your posting. I think I have some information you may find useful!

I am sitting in London with my grandmother who was originally Doris Smart, whose father was John Smart (Ester Smart's brother). I have a sketchy family history of John and Ester's family with dates and my grandmother remebers her Aunty Ester. I'm trying to find out more information on the Smarts but perhaps we can collaborate on information.

My e-mail address is inyawallace@hotmail.com if you would like to make contact with me and then I can send you all the family history information.

I see that you are a memeber of Ancestry.au. Despite us being in London, there are many Smarts in Australia.

Hope to here from you soon

Regards Inya Wallace.

I only know him as Uncle Willy, but from what I know of all sides of the family I can't see anyone it can possibly be. The picture has a crest on it with 1883-1884 on, and it was taken by P Klier in Rangoon, Burma. I also have an individual picture of the wife.

Anyone any ideas on my next step?

Hi there. I found your original post today and wonder how you are going? If you haven't already been to the site you may find lots of info on BMDs of your family on the British Library India Office Family History online search here: http://indiafamily.bl.uk/UI/Home.aspx

I typed in the name Christian Louis Melosch and got plenty of hits immediately such as his birth on 8 April 1890, baptism on 14 May 1890 - both at St Matthew's C.of.E. in Moulmein.

There's also all the dates of marriage of his father and Kitty, births of Constance, Dorothea and Katherine, etc but I don't want to take away the thrill of finding this all for yourself so - go to the site, enjoy the discovery and have fun!

Cheers for now,
Marty

No, I'm not a descendant. I'm the one who tried to help at the family history library. I like to to work on genealogies that are harder to find information on and have a great story. And your Melosch family was that. I'll keep checking when I can, and pass on information to you if I find anything more.

From the books Old Moulmein 875-1890 by R. R. Langham-Carter published by Mountain Sun Press 1947 and Birma zwischen unabhangigkeit zuerst, by Hans-Bernd Zollner-Burma-2000. Christain Louis Melosch senior was born in Bremen Germany in 1849 and died in Moulmein in 1928. He had a company called Melosch-Hollmann & Company that exported rice to Bremen. A listing of these books can be found on google books. However the full text is not available for Old Moulmein just a snippet. The german book only has his birth and death year and where he was born and died. Hope this helps.

Re: my ancestors

Hi - I will have to do some more research, but I can tell you from what I have studied hence far, is that all the Shushtaris, Sherazees, Ispahanis, Kashanis, and southern Iranian names are families descending from the Parsi families, who were the original and indigenous Persians who migrated to Hindostan and beyond during the 1800s, when British trade and dominance in the region was great. Also, before this period, were the Mughals, whereby Persian scribes and businessmen travelled to domains of its empire such as India and Burma. The Parsis in India that follow the Zoroastrian religion are the descendents of the Persians that fled from Iran at the arrival of the Arabs in the 8-9th century A.D. Iran was from then on, colonised into an Islamic Commonwealth. The Old Persians that left carried royal language, culture and heritage that stretched from Old Iranian times.

Yangon was a trade-centre for both West and East-Asia. The Parsi term 'bandari' means 'people from the port'. this descends from the time when the Persian Empire exchanged trade with nations along the Persian Gulf. Similarly, the other group of Old-Persians that left Iran in the 1800s for trade in South-East Asia, were mainly people from the Bandar region (Southern Iran - Western Asia).

Was your father's name 'Mohammad' Jafer Sherazee? Please let me know as I may have a bit of information on him.

Yenangyat, Burma 1901-05 Bennett;Sampson;Conte;Jacobs

Grandfather John Alexander Bennett (Canadian). Grandmother Jean Irene Bennett (US citizen.) She was a dentist. They lived in Yenangyat in 1901-1905. He was Superintendent for Burma Oil. Had child, James Gorden Bennett born in Rangoon. Delivered by woman Doctor named Dr. Conte. Jean stayed with the doctor for months before the baby came.

Closest neighbors in Yenangyat were the Sampson's a mile away. They had child born 1904 at home, Todd Sampson. Interested in finding family of Sampson's. I have a photo of them. She says there are only 4 women (European) within 50 miles. But mentions a lot of natives and "servants."

I have photos of John and Jean with their "servants" (one name given as Shau who has a wife and a baby) There may be people still there related to the servants in the photo.

In a letter she mentions the Deputy Commissioner is coming to dinner. Would like to find out who that would have been.

Also mentions a Mr. Jacobs the general manager who "comes up once a week" and who has a Steamer Launch. They had two grown daughters in Calcutta and a grown son.

Yenangyat was on Irrawady River South of Mandalay on west side of river. Sometimes it shows on maps if they are detailed enough. Interested in learning more about Yenangyat (Upper Burma) area, photos, any info, maps. Interested in Burma Oil in that location in early 1900's. Would like to travel there but don't know if there is anything still there and if travel is allowed? Please respond to mixmoseslake@aol.com as I am not on line a lot. Ann Mix

I am interested in the history of Sogdiana, and the Princess Roxanne, who became the wife of Alexander the Great.
What was the language she spoke? Was it Parsi?
What did she mean when she said she was not Persian but from Amazons? Where did the Amazons come from?
Does her Palace Fortress still exist?
Where was her mother from?
What does your history teach about her, and how does it feel about her marriage to Alexander?
So much is known about him, but so little of her. I blame that one the fact that history/ancestory took little notice of women as being important.
GINNY 2 at vmartinez5946@aol.com

I am searching for information on my great grandfather, Joseph William Lawrence and his family. He was born in Rangoon between 1884 - 1888, but moved to Calcutta some time after that. His parents were William Lawrence (from Scotland) and Lispeth (she may have been from Calcutta).

Joseph had three siblings: Catherine, Josephine, and William II; all of whom were placed in a convent, in Calcutta, sometime around 1890 - 1900.

He may have attended one of the Christian Brothers Colleges during his early youth in Calcutta. Also, He may have been a merchant sailor prior to immigrating to the US.

Any information found would be of great assistance

Re: Melosch

I have a great-grandfather whose name is Louis Melosch. He had seven children in Moulmein, Burma. Their names were Georg (I believe), Thea, Constance, Ella, Louis (I believe), and Victoria. My grandmother, Constance moved to the U.S. when she married. I have pictures of Louis Melosch (the father). He married a lady name Kitty Graceman.

I have just joined Ancestry.com, and have discovered a Christian Louis Melosch who married a Kitty Grasemann. I suspect the spelling of "Kitty Graceman" is incorrect based on my discoveries at Ancestry.com. Kitty Grasemann (presumably my Kitty Graceman) was supposedly of dark complexion. The research on Ancestry.com of the mother of Kitty Grasemann states a "Mah Tsee". The one picture I have of our "Kitty Graceman" shows a lady suggesting Asian ancestry. I am sure it is the same lady.

I have a picture of the several of the Melosch children. One shows my grandmother, Constance, and a younger brother, who has a dark complexion. There is some confusion among my relative as to whether his name is Georg or Louis. I would think Louis would be the first son and Georg the younger son. My grandmother Constance was born in Moulmein, Burma in 1887. Her younger brother could be 3 years younger, based on the picture.

If you think our families are the same or related, let me know.
