Hi, my Grandad was from Sylhet, and was called Abu Sadat Machmud Uddin Choudhury. He moved to Britain in the 1960's. He may be a distant relative of your Grandad, I'm not sure.

basically try and find out atleast what village he is from. also what was his name if it is related to any family titles in that area. Normally villages will have names such as syed bari, talukdar bari, chowdhury bari, sikder bari.

Hey my mom and her family called Talukder. They used to live in borishal, pirojpur. They were landloards and still good influance in that area.

I really appreciate the response, I know very little about this side of my family and it's my namesake. Nur Edris Alli died in 1955 when my dad was 15 so I don't have anyone to ask questions to anymore. My dad remembers very little about his dad.

I did get some papers from immigration so this is what I found out. I'm not sure on what part of Sylhet, I only know it says on his papers, it was Sylhut, B.E. India. His dad is listed as both Tetu Mea and Tetu Miea and his mom is listed as Shaban Bebe. On one other form, he listed he was from the province of Assam.

He left Calcutta in 1924 and arrived in Baltimore Harbor on May 15, 1924. He listed the ship he took as the Bulkin Loranga.

On another form, he listed that his birth name was Idris Alli and he added the Nur after arriving in the U.S. He wasn't sure on his exact date of birth but he heard from his dad it was January 1903.

I also know that he had a sister that was still alive there in 1952, but I don't know her name. I guess it would be possible we still have family there.

I know this isn't much, but let me know if I can look through the paperwork for anything else.

hi brother,i noticed your message and thought i could give a little help.my name is soyful and my ancestors are also from sylhet.i studt sylhet history in my spare time and look at friends family trees.

you said your grand father was from sylhet,but you need to be a bit more specific.was he from sylhet dristict or sylhet town.which part of sylhet was he from,did he migrate else where,if so where and when.if he migrated out of bangladesh e.g before 1940s there may be a good chance that he was well known as only a few thousand sylheties were abroud then.

a bit more info on your grandad may be helpful

During the Maratha civil war (1707-1713), Maratha Senapati (Marathi for general) Chandrasen Jadhav, who led the Tarabai faction (his predecessor Rajaram's widow who opposed Shahuji), ravaged the Southern provinces but was defeated by Balaji after a prolonged war.

In 1713, Shahuji was attacked at Khed by forces loyal to Tarabai. To face this attack, Shahuji appointed Balaji as Senakarta (Marathi for Army Commander).

This increased the confidence Shahu had in him, and he appointed Balaji as his representative to negotiate with Kanhoji Angre, the Admiral of the Maratha Navy, who was allied with Tarabai. Before Balaji could take up this assignment, he requested Shahuji to appoint him as a Peshwa. Shahu conceded this request, and Balaji became the Chattrapati's first Peshwa on November 16, 1713. Kanhoji agreed to become the Sarkhel (Marathi for Admiral) of Shahuji's navy.

Kanhoji Angre or Conajee Angria or Sarkhel Angre (? – 1729) was the first notable chief of the Maratha Navy in 18th century India. He harassed British, Dutch and Portuguese naval interests in the Indian Ocean during the 18th century, and hence was known to them as a pirate. Similar work was carried out against the colonial powers by the Kunjali Marakkars in the 16th century. Despite the attempts of the British and Portuguese to subdue Angre, he remained undefeated until his death.

Hi, my name is Debabrata Sarkhel...we are from Dhoolakhola, Hijla, Dist. Barishal, Bangladesh. My parents are from then East Pakistan, came to India prior to India-Pakistan partition. Our surname(podobi) is actually Chatterjee, but our title (upadhi) is Sarkhel.

I also have this information that this title came from Mahashtra, the admiral of Chhatrapati Shivaji was titled as Sarkhel, which means Sar means top most person & khel is simply khel, i.e. sports & games activities. I hope this was related to their ability in battle field or navy.

Now the question is how this title came to eastern part of the country.....may be during 1760s the Maratha invasion to bengal brought some sarkhel family to settle in bengal. And they expanded their family in bengal....but i dont know how these khashriya's became brahims (most sarkhels found chatterji, moitra or ganguly etc....who are all brahims.)

Lets hope some body can put more lights on this.
