Hi Julian,

I'm hoping that 5 years down the track you are still doing family history research. I'd love to have the email account of Amelia Anderson .

I gave family history a bit of a break when I hit some dead ends - and my mum had breast cancer - but am back at it again as the records online keep getting better.
I'm on ancestry.com these days with the tree Kings2Convicts and Ancestry profile caseyslr

Mohammed RUSTAM Kabul, Afghanistan

Hi, my name is Omar and I am part of the first generation of children born in the United States. My mom was born Fatana Rostamali and is now Fatana Sarwar and my father is currently known as John Sarwar. I do know that he changed his name from Mohammed to John after immigrating to the United States. My mother immigrated to the United States in December of 1983 while my father came in 1981. Trying to trace back my family lines is a bit difficult. Speaking to my father and mother has only given me names. As it turns out they don't keep birth or death records of people. Because of this my parents only have birthdays that were 'invented' as they like to call it and I'm assuming this would be true for anyone else in my family that immigrated here.

I am particularly interested in tracing the paternal line on my father's side mainly because I know less about it. The line going from my grandfather to my great great grandfather. Mohammed Akbar was my grandfather and he was married to Zahra. Before him was Mohammed Azam married to Tajwar. And finally before that was Mohammed Rustam married to Zenab. One of the issues I'm having is the way the names are spelled. Since they are in another language I'm sure the names are spelled the way they sound. Also, as far as my father knows everyone was born and married in Kabul, Afghanistan.

I'd like to know if anyone can help me find more information on my great great grandfather or point me in a direction to start. Information on Mohammed Akbar or Mohammed Azam would be appreciated.

Thank you.
Omar Sarwar

Dear Jan

One of my family Fanny Bayard Bray was engaged to Captain Hugh Spottiswoode who was killed during the Indian Mutiny at Nasirabad. I know that Hugh is a well used name in the Spottiswoode family so I can interested in finding anything to do with his parents and how he fits into the family. Fanny survived the mutiny and ended up living with Mrs Brind, daughter of Lady Sale of the Diary of the Cabul retreat, and was governess to Mrs Brinds daughters. Anything you maybe able to assist with reagrding Hugh's parentage would be greatly appreciated. Regards Kenn

My family are related to the Sales by two marriages and Mary Spotiswoode Trevor's cousin was engaged to another member of our family. Your right Lady Sale's account is very dry but I am writing a small Memoir of her life. Any assistance would be gratefully received. Regards Kenn

I am interested in the history of the Spottiswoode family and would be keen to get a copy of your family account of the hostages if it's possible. My GGG grandparents were William Spottiswoode & Janet Mitchell, Mary Spottiswoode's parents; my connection is Agnes, Mary's elder sister. I am trying to gather as much family history as I can but it is scarce.

Regards, Jan

This may be of interest to you? My Great Great Grandmother was Amelia Anderson who was one of the captives taken by Akbar Khan during the Retreat from Cabul. I have recently found a transcript made by my Grandfather of her account of the whole 8 months they were in captivity. It is quite a formidable document, it goes into much greater detail of the events while they were in captivity than Lady Sale's account. Anyway, I am in the process of typing the whole thing out, Mrs Trevor and her 7 children are mentioned, as is the fact that her husband had been killed 2 weeks before.
If it would interest you I would be happy to email you the account.
Regards, Julian Scott

I would add that the death certificate is viewed by genealogists as the least reliable document concerning the birth of the person who died. The informant may be a younger person with little knowledge of family history. Sometimes the process of grieving hampers the accuracy of information.

Reg Niles

When a family had a child, did that child aquire their father's first name as their last name?

I have a death certificate for Baboo Din born August 24, 1889 in India (as indicated on death certificate) but the family states he was born in Afghanistan.

Baboo's father is listed as Ja La Baboo. Baboo was my husband's Grandfather, John Gulam Mohammed's uncle.

By chance is this how families from India named their children and Baboo was actually born in India?

Any information someone could give me regarding how a child was or still is named in Afghanistan would be appreicated.

Thank you for your time.
Robin

Majority of Aghan population are pathans (or pashtoons). The naming tradition of their child is almost the same as you decribed. The child last name goes after the father's last name. Their initial name is different. Sometime the child last name may goes after the father first name. This is a common custom their but it may break too.

I am a descendant of Captain Robert Salusbury Trevor who was killed in the First Afghan War of 1839-1842. At the time his wife and 7 children were taken hostage and held for a number of months, in which time Mary, his wife gave birth to another daughter.

I know what happened to 4 of the children, (the elder boys) but am looking for information about what happened to Mrs Trevor, nee Mary Spottiswoode, and the rest of her brood when they were rescued and returned to either England or Scotland.
