I think Gervase Rodgers's wife was Amy E. Nichols, married Blackpool 2q1953. (Gervase was heading for Blackpool in 1832 to work as a draftsman, aged 21.)
There is also a passenger list for that family arriving inSouthampton 23 Aug 1920 from Cape Town, giving their abode then as Umtali, Rhodesia (Louise 32, Ivy 12, Fred 10, Gervase 8).
rgds Barry

The death report of Fred Henry Rogers is here: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-14684-45047-31?cc...
His wife, Lousa, survived him.
There are other clues on that death report that might help you, eg. it was signed by his daughter-in-law, A. Rogers (Gervase is usually a boys name, but can be a girls name, so that A. Rogers could have been the wife of either Fred or Gervase), and although he died in Salisbury the death report was submitted by his daughter-in-law in Bulawayo (presumably that is where she then lived).
I couldn't see death reports for the other's mentioned (either as Rodgers or Rogers), the index page is here:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-14684-32394-28?cc...
regards, Barry

Death Record William H K TAYLOR

I live in England.

I am trying to find the Death Notice for William Herbert Kenneth TAYLOR born 1901 Ryde,Isle of Wight,England. He emigrated to S Africa/Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) in 1947.

I have found the following reference using the Family Search web site - 88/188/38.

I believe he died in Zimbabwe between 1950 and 1960 and his widow returned to the UK in Nov 1960.

If the number 88 refers to the Death Register volume number
then the death occured in 1952.

Can someone please explain what 188 and 38 refer to. I think the 38 refers to the page number in volume 88 but what does 188 refer to?

Are there any newspaper archives that may have an obitury I could see and perhaps learn more about him, ie where he was buried.

I really would appreciate some kind person's help with this enquiry.

Thank you

Kind regards

Margaret Rose

Can't really help you I'm afraid - Harold Maitland Haslehurst born Essex 1889. Gave the name Maitland to both his sons. His father Edmund Haslehurst does not appear to have the Maitland in his name - wondering if perhaps it was his wife Florence's maiden name? There is a Florence Maitland of right age born in London. Harold had brothers and sisters Winifred, Edmond, Rebecca and Wilfred and possibly more - have not looked to far into it. Do let me know if you come up with any connection. Suzi

I was thinking he must have got his surname from somewhere; perhaps from his biological parents, perhaps from adopted. In either case you might find the parent's death notices which could well & should have notation regarding him. It's a long shot, but I think worth following-up if you don't get any sense out of Zimbabwe (and that's highly likely, I fear!)
regards, Barry

One thought, there are a load of death notices of Payne's in the Rhodesia/Zimbabwe death registers 1892-1977. The specific index page with for Payne is here: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-14684-35798-16?cc... .
Usually next of kin is noted; it's a fair amount of work to find each of those, but with a bit of luck you might find your relative mentioned. Too find a specific record you need to note it's idex number ie, D.R 1000/18 would be in the records for 1918, record #1000. Go back to the root directory, and open the folder 'Death Registers', look for the year and open that file, see how many pages are in that file and what the number of the first record is (top RH corner), then guestimate where you need to jump to to find the number you want to find, bracket back and forth until you locate it.

I am looking for any information on my Great-grandfather, Henry John Payne. He always used to say he grew up as a illegitimate child on the streets of Rhodesia. His gravestone says he was born on the 31/01/1892. Any help would be great! Thank you!

Read carefully. I did not say Felicity joined a convent (although it is possible she did after I left Hartley in 1969, perhaps Geoff Baynham died!). I said I seemed to remember she had a relative who was one of the Dominican Sisters at Martindale. In the 60s I think she was working in one of the local shops or businesses to earn a living while Hubby propped up bars.

Thank you so much! I'm so pleased to hear anything at all about the family! The members of this branch of the Edwards family still alive don't know a great deal more than I do, so it's lovely to hear anything! I had heard that Felicity joined a Convent, but had no details about it. I seem to remember someone saying that Felicity & another sibling tried to convert my grandfather, Noel, but there was some incident following their visit and they apparently never saw each other again. My mother says that one of Felicity's sons was Trevor and that I did meet him, must've been when I was very young as I don't remember him. I'll have a look at the websites you mentioned. Thank you again!

If you google eGSSA.org you will find they have a "Cemeteries' Project" and you can find a picture of the graves of Cecil Reynolds Edwards d. 1938, Josephine Lucy Edwards 1896-1976, Stephanzina Francina Edwards, d. 1967 and Tommy Edwards, d. 1968, in the Gatooma (Kadoma) cemetery. Also google bsap.org. They have a Regimental association which has the history of the whole caboodle. The most important "industry" in Gatooma was the David Whitehead Spinning Mill, the weaving mill was in Hartley (Chegutu). It had been a mining area, mostly small-working, but apart from a few large mines (Giant Mine, Gadzema) mining had almost died out by the 1950s.

Felicity Baynham, usually called "Phil" or "Fel" was a charming woman married to Geoff Baynham - I believe ex RAF, commonly regarded as a a total B., called himself an insurance agent but spent most of his time in the Hartley (Chegutu) Hotel or Continental Restaurant Bar claiming he was drumming up business contacts. I seem to remember that "Fel" had a relative who was a Sister at Martindale School, a school run at that time by Dominican Sisters for mixed race children at Selous on the main road to Salisbury (Harare). Still exists I think. I clearly remember one of the Sisters remarking that she knew "Felicity had had a very hard life", but no longer remember the context. I also think that Felicity had two sons - but this is vague, they may have been at boarding school, Hartley had no senior school. I would think that both Felicity and her husband are dead by now - very old if not and, if there were two sons, there are no entries for Baynham in the Zimbabwe telephone directory, nor do there appear to be any Baynhams in South Africa. Hope this helps a bit.

I guess he was a school in Umtali then.
I had a look at That DR 73/101/20; it's a list of Active Service Estates, in Volume 73 (covering years 1941-1946), page 101, entry no. 20 (that page 101 is image 135, so if you find that volume you can jump straight to it). There is no other information there, but it's assumed is that he was presumed dead.
That RAF 112 site URL shows he was creditied with shooting down at least that one Bf109 (later called Messerschmit).
I found this on another page of that site:
Name: EDWARDS, FELIX FRANCIS JOSEPH
Initials: F F J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Pilot Officer (Pilot)
Regiment: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Unit Text: 112 Sqdn.
Date of Death: 13/06/1942
Service No: 80140
Additional information: Of Southern Rhodesia.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: 3.
This may be of help
From the contents of your email below I confirm the following.

According to the Nominal Roll, EDWARDS, Francis Charles - joined the British South Africa Police (BSAP) in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) on 20.02.1909 (likely as a Trooper) with Regimental Number 1044 and served until 30.04.1939. Unfortunately the Nominal Roll does not record his rank upon discharge, but having served 30 years, he would most likely have retired as a Commissioned Officer. With 50 being the mandatory retirement age, he must have joined at about aged 20 and thus born c 1889. Kokstad is a small town in Natal, South Africa, close to the boundary with the Eastern Cape. This would suggest that his parents might have moved to South Africa (from the UK?) prior to or around 1889 – perhaps connected in some way to the local sugar industry. It was also not unusual for ex-BSAP officers to take up a second career, either in the Rhodesian civil service, in business, or even farming or mining. With WW II breaking out later that year, his 30 years’ service in the BSAP (a highly trained Para-military force) would certainly have equipped him well for some useful non-combat role.

An abridged version of his Record of Service would be with the National Archives of Zimbabwe (www.archives.gov.zw). It would contain details of his postings and promotions and may even provide his last residential address upon being discharged. Unfortunately, there is no electronic access to such files, or for that matter, any other records, which might assist in piecing together details of his family and their descendants. Records of marriages, births and deaths from 1909 onwards must exist in Zimbabwe but impossible to access without either a physical visit or direct written communication with the appropriate government department. With sons and grandsons sometimes following their forebears into the BSAP, I also checked the Nominal Roll for Noel John EDWARDS and Felix EDWARDS, but neither is listed. However, a Felix EDWARDS is listed on Linkedin.com with extensive connections in Southern Africa.

Gatooma (now called Kadoma) is (was) a thriving mining centre located in central Zimbabwe on the main road between Harare and Bulawayo.

I think that’s the best I can do under the circumstances.
