there are so many sitholes around southern Africa, I have met many in my travels and been called sister by strangers in many countries. This is a reality. The question we are trying to establish is why we share this name - do we share a common ancestry too? The differences in praise songs are to be expected as time and place influences how such traditions evolve. so what praise song do you know? Perhaps we could compile these and see.

we are still trying to determine who we are ... All we know for sure is that we are Nguni. Depending on where you are or where your people are from then you could be any of the groups you listed. My people are said to have come into Zimbabwe with Soshangana but settled among the ndau people in the eastern part of Zimbabwe and then sithole as a totem was also known as Chirandu.

Dear Jabu, Thank you very much for that explanation. where can I get more information about Magogo and Gampu, this is the first time to hear about them. There is nothing I can find in any archival sources in Zimbabwe about this at all. Where can I find praise poetry for the Sitholes?

Now more than ever I am convinced that we must write our history, we have the technology and there are a few elders left, I think we can do it.

I can't find any references to land under my relatives in the KAB archives except for one item...is there another way to check the list of old land titles in the archives online perhaps through another keyword? He married Albertina Smith aka Britcliffe, a widow, in Cape Town, some time between the death of her previous husband in 1907 and her death in 1917.

I am looking for information on the following family. Edward Allerton came to South Africa about 1901, he brought his wife Emily Amelia Seers and son Edward Henry Augustus over in 1902. They had a daughter Dorothea Emma Jane Allerton in 1902. Edward passed away in 1907, and his wife Emily and 2 children moved to Australia.

Edward was born in 1879 in Wandsworth England to Augustus Allerton and Emma Jane Higman.

Edward brought his siblings over to South Africa (found on shipping records) - Lorenzo Allerton, Thomas Edwin Allerton and Emma Martha Allerton.

Thomas Edwin Allerton (b18/1/1884 England D25/10/1969 Roodepoort) married Theresia Maria Schwarzendahl in Johannesberg 14/02/1914. They had 3 children Theresa Maria (married a George Cornelius Kraft) and Augustus Allerton and Thomas Edwin Allerton (who had died at the time of his mothers death in 1969)

Thomas Edwin Allerton was in the armed forces when he was 38 years of age, joining in 1922, living in Protoria.
Emma Martha married William Matthias Howells 1 Nov 1906 in Newcastle Natal. On his records it states his children as being Edwin Valentine 14/02/14, Augustus Helder 27/8/16 and Therese Maria 3/8/18.

It looks like in 1944 he was released from full time due to arthritis in the knees from his military services and was living in Caledon Street, Standerton. In 1945 he was living in Roodepoort and received a war medal.

Lorenzo Married Amy Williams and together they had one child Dorothy Allerton. He died in 1935 in South Africa. From the reading of the will he was still married to Amy Allerton, born Williams, formerly Roberts and was temporarily residing in South Africa. He was in South Africa on business purposes. His wife Amy, their child of marriage and a child from her former marriage were living in England. He strongly stated in his will that he wanted these two children to stay in a boarding school and his wife to have no control over them. This will was written in 1928.

Does anyone have any information on any of these family lines at all??

Hi Malcolm,

Thank you for your help - I would have thought it rather unusual to have the banns read in Ampleforth, then married in South Africa (I couldn't find a UK marriage either). But now I have an idea of the time frame, I wonder if a local newspaper would have details. I will pursue this, but, would be grateful for anything RFHS could add.

Best wishes

Pat

Hi Pat, I am transcribing the records on behalf of the Ryedale Family History Society as Ampleforth falls in this area. On reading the record of Banns I was not sure if I had recorded the surname Faure correctly as the original record left a lot to be desired . To check I went through all the Ampleforth marriage records after the Banns were first read and then after all three readings of the Banns . Unfortunately I have not come across a recorded marriage for Catherine Withington to Laurence Johannes de Villier Faure. A check of the BMD index and also on Findmypast for the relevant period again finds no record. I can only presume that they did not marry in Ampleforth but elsewhere and more likely out of the country possibly in South Africa.

Sorry I cannot help any further however I will see if any members of the RFHS can assist at all as they are the experts in these matters.

Regards

Malcolm

Hi Malcolm,

Thank you so much! If you are transcribing the marriage banns, presumably they were married late June 1906 in Ampleforth?

This has long intrigued me - how did the Doctor of Ampleforth's daughter meet and marry the first clerk to the President of South Africa?

Best wishes
Pat

The Banns were shown in the three Sundays starting on the 10 June 1906. Not sure if this is any help but if I can help any further please do not hesitate to ask.

Regards
Malcolm

I find the discussions on this platform interesting and confusing to some extent.

The little of the history i know from my elders is Sithole by origin are Nguni. A story is told that back in history in the times before Shaka there was a Nguni group that managed to find some medication for a disease that had caused serious problems killing calves. With their understanding of medicine a group found the correct medicine that saved calves, that gave them the name sithole (thole - calf) as people affectionately called them for the heroic act.

During the mfecane wars of Shaka the group of the Sithole were then equally affected and depending on where the groups were located as some remained in zulundand, while some who were close to Mzilikazi moved with him under the leadership of their leaders Magogo and Gampu Sithole.

Another group went through Mozambique and finally settled in Chipinge. The Group that went through Chipinge were with other Nguni groups.

A story is told that on reaching Chipinge because they were Nguni there were heard by the groups that occupied the land say "sindingi ndawo" they were then called "ndau" people who are always saying Ndawo.

Just to picked on a few few issues on why are the sitholes are all over the region i think there are a number of reasons the Shaka wars and intra-regional migration during mfacane and during the wenela time the gold mining rush in the 1950 to the 1970s.

And why are sithole with other groups Tsonga and others i would presume it was because of the scattering of the mfacane.

Hi Alan

I'm a remote cousin, not sure what exactly, sister of Alan and daughter of Rosemary. Mum has been talking about her trip to SA in 1949, and yes, her granny, married to Arthur William, was a Combrink. Not sure of her first name. Initially she said Connie Combrink but the next time we discussed it she queried that name.
