Hi, Thanks for your reply.

Most of the details are in the first posted message.
Kenneth Hardy was born in 1913, His wife was Olive maiden name Nelson. When leaving England they had one child Anna Maria born in 1940 although I can find no record of Olive or Anna travelling in the ships listings.
Kenneths father William died in 1944 and was buried on D-Day. And as far as we know his mother Alice Mary Anne travelled out as well.
I dont know what other info I can give you that may help but it sounds like there is a good chance that it cuold be that same person.

Regards Phil.

Re: SITHOLE surname

Hi

History tells me that, when Soshangane came to settle in Ndau area running away from Zulu battles(under Shaka), he found Ndau people. Soshangane(also known as Manukosi, the grand father of Ngungunyana) and his people(Known as Gaza Nguni) reached the central Mozambique and earsten Zimbabwe which already inhabited by Ndau people in 1820's. For decades, the Ndau people were prejudiced by the Nguni speaking people(especially Ngungunyana). I am atold that Soshangane ruled over a military state with age regiments for male warriors based on the Zulu model in South Africa.

However, centuries earlier, Shona speaking(Karanga) chieftancies) had dominated some of the same TSONGA speaking groups that came to live under Soshangane(mind you, the Ndau people were always there, as Ndaus with their Ndau Chieftancies). At the beginning of the 19th century, the Tsonga chieftancies, had asserted their autonomy to establish themselves as culrurally distict from Ngunis and Ndaus. They then called themselves Shangani(after Soshangane) the first Gaza Nguni leader, who settled in their midst.

I would agree if you say, during the interaction and cross OR INTER marriages amongst Ndaus, Gaza ngunis, and Shanganis, SURNAMES AND TOTEMS WERE ALSO shared. thus, you may find Sitholes amongst all these groups. But thanks for your input, my search si still on, Hope to get more input on this subject.

Pleasee can you give me, the Sithole salutation, for example, Sithole Moyo or Chirandu or Mapfudze or Ntini. I am not sure. if you know this. Please help me.

Regards

It was very interesting to hear from you this week of all weeks, because the lady who I was trying to help with this name invited me to tea and I was looking to see if I could find any more nuggets of information for her.
As I mentioned in my message in 2004 I had done considerable research for her, which now you have contacted me you can have copies of. With a name like Antoinette, I wonder can you read French? mine is only schoolgirl French. I do have some bits and pieces that I gleaned from the Society of Genealogists which I haven't tried to transcrie but you may be able to.
This family that I have worked on is very interesting. If you would like to send me your email address I will forward all that I have done and you can see if it is of interest to you. Maybe we can put our two heads together and get a few generations further back.
I do have access to quite a lot of records as I work as the voluntary researcher for the Bedfordshire Family History Society. Jean who this research is for is a personal friend and not one of our members.
my email is research@bfhs.org.uk
I look forward to hearing from you
Mary Wooldridge

I am researching my family history in South Africa and have discovered the name Fivas in our family tree. Found on my mother's side of the family. According to my information I can trace the name to Mark Samuel Fivas b.1841 in George, Eastern Cape, but have no information preceding this. I am interested in any further information and in particular,if our Fivas family came from France (which is our family's assumption) or if they came from the Vaud canton in Switzerland. Any help would be appreciated.

Antoinette

With regard to your query last month (Sept 2009) regarding Astrid Jackson - I am her younger brother, Henry, and would be willing to update you on Astrid and family if you would be so kind as to identify yourself to me. I have met most of Astrid's friends in France over the years whilst she was living there. I am also in contact with Paul Tanner - Tremaine who started this thread. His hobby is genealogy (family trees) and he has been putting our Jackson "tree" together for some time.

Re: James Franklin Hamilton

Curtis,

I am a direct Hamilton decsendant from this line. To be honest the buck stops here. The last surviving document is his death certificate which states his birth. Decatur Co.,Clay township, Indiana in the 1850 census and it was stated with his father, mother, and siblings. His fathers name was Thomas Hamilton but I do not have anything further. What I do know is that he might be a decsendant of Tennesse's Hamiltons, which are a big group and popular to this day or from Pensylvania, which I do not have any supporting documents. Because of the 1840's census only lists the Head of House Hold and not spouse or children it makes it very difficult to trace or cross reference. I believe the next approach would to find Thomas Hamilton's death certificate, which might state his birth and so forth. But I do not know what the common practices of those days may be. Either way, going through the DNA testing would be a better route but it links me to far back and does not clear up the gap in between. Lets cross our fingers and hope that you can find more info.

how exciting...... I have started to trace my family history and there may be a connection. The fathest back I can go is Daniel (MOSES) and his wife MARY KARBEL..... this was changed to CARPEL and KARPEL and the CARPELS have stayed in the UK. I have found that on the 1911 census, the family are listed as coming from KOURLAND, which I beleive is modern day LITHUANIA. They had 7 children, Tilly, Gershon (JOSEPH), Sarah, Louis, Ada, Abraham (Alfred - my grandfather), Jacob/Jack and possibly 2 other children who died. They came to London around 1900, I suspect with other fmaily members. I have details of ISAAC, NATEY, LAZARUS and HYMAN.... but not much else to go on!
I'd be really interested to hear your family history and to see whether we indeed have anything in commom!
thanks in advance for your response to this .
All the best
Susan CARPEL

Glad it was helpful. I can provide more on the Bold side if you like (for example, Lonsdale was Edward's mother's maiden name), but I don't think I have all that much about the Budds.

If they were your great-grandparents, I think that makes us fourth cousins.
Michael Owen in Pilgrim's Rest, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Researching Michael Owen, son of John Michael Owen & Sally Evans. He was born 1905 in Cwm y Glo, Caernarvonshire, Wales and died Aft. 1994 in Pilgrim's Rest, Mpumalanga, South Africa.

In 1994 a Welsh TV documentary (Gwyn A'I Fyd) interviewed Michael Owen, Age 88, the last of the welsh community, living in the village of Pilgrim's Rest, South Africa. He left Cwm y Glo near Llanberis, North Wales and started working in Pilgrim's Rest on December 15, 1923, at age 18. Michael worked at the Dinorwig Quarry in Llanberis for 3yrs before coming here, but then the depression of the 1920's had no work in Wales. Michael stated that his father, John Michael Owen first came to Pilgrim's Rest in 1911 and returned home to Cwm y Glo, he then took his family back to Pilgrim's Rest, including his wife, Sally, a daughter, and two sons. There was a community of about 100 welsh people in Pilgrim's Rest when the family arrived. The family lived in a house on the main street in the village (now restored by the national museum).

In 1994 Michael Owen was the only Welsh man left in Pilgrim's Rest from the days when they produced gold. He and his wife Rhoda have lived in their house "Bryn Awelon" since 1938 and are the oldest residence of the village.
