Since this post I have found that in 1916 Boer War medals were posted to a L/C D Lind at Melkhoutboom, Elands River, Uitenhage, Cape Colony for service in the Stutterheim District Mounted Troops. There is no notation on the document that the medals were returned or not delivered. It is a very good chance this the Douglas Alexander Lind we are searching for as his 2 daughters were born in Stutterheim.
He was 'retired due to retrenchment' in 1905 and suffered a hand injury. His was as a forester at Kologha Forest and then Quacu Forest near Stutterheim.
Does anyone know what may have drawn him to Melkhoutboom??? What was going on there in the early 1900's?? This is the last trace of Douglas -- no further employment records, death records, ......nothing for him nor his wife or daughters. Where was he between 1905 and 1916??
HELP!!! Any suggestions??
Thanks, Kathleen
