Hello,
Has anyone ever come across the surnames Colm or Colim in South Africa, particularly in Stellenbosch?
My third great-grandmother, Henrietta Christina (1842 - 1940), was married to Daniel Frederick Berrange BRINK (1842 - 1911).
According to Henrietta's Death Notice she was born and married in Stellenbosch.
She died 6 July 1940, aged around 97, at 29 Oxford Street, Woodstock, Cape Town.
According to Henrietta's Civil Death record her maiden name was Colm. (Source: FamilySearch.org, "South Africa, Cape Province, Civil Deaths, 1895-1972", 1940: Cape Town, Image no.: 2270)
Henrietta's Death Notice, which was filled out by her son Henry, gives her maiden name as Colim, but does not name her parents. (Source: Cape Town Archives).
I have so far been unable to find any marriage record for Henrietta and Daniel in the Stellenbosch records available on FamilySearch.org, both Anglican and DRC; nor have I been able to find baptism records for their children.
Ancestry24.com and the National Archives seem to have one or two Colm records, but it doesn't appear to be a very widespread name.
Thank you for your time,
Craig Sheldon
