Hi Liz,

The only info I have for you are the parents of Charline Gravinia Payet. They are Charles Payet and Emma Talma.

I am researching the TALMA name and would be grateful for any info on Emma Talma or any other Talma you might have found.

Kind regards,
Sylvia Binch (nee Talma)
The Netherlands

Hi there, my mother in law was born in the Seychelles so I have been doing her mum's side of the family.

Looking for any connections to William Francis Antoine Toll/Tall (b. 1872) and Charline Gravinia Payet (b. 1879) married 1897. I also have info going back from them but wanted to keep this brief.

Also, Gaston Morin and Leontine Alix Etheve (b. 1891, father Vilbrode Etheve, mother Marie Fanelie Noemie Lablache).

Many thanks,
Liz.

Hello..I stumbled on this website by accident and found someone else trying to trace the family of Sauzier. I am a Sauzier born in the Seychelles. My grandfather was Gaston Sauzier..his siblings were Alfred, Iris ( I think she went to live in Mauritius)she had a son Ferdinand and brothers Jules and another brother (cannot remember his name)who I was told migrated to Belgium. Their father was Gabriele Sauzier and mother's maiden name was Savy (cannot remember her first name) I remember hearing another sister married in the Lemarchant (unsure of the spelling) My grandfather had 4 children from his first mariage. Aricie, Paul, Jean, Sabine. There were 6 children from the second wife. Marie-Antoinette (deceased) Therese, Ann, Marguerite, Michel (deceased) Benjamin (deceased)I think both uncle Alfred and uncle Michel married Lepere girls they were sisters (unsure)

Cheers
Kathee

Hi Rachel, Thank you so much for the info. I thought I would never get any info. I have so many questions to ask and I hope it's okay to ask you some? Who are your parents and where do you live. Do you know if Jules and Ange have other brother's and sisters? As I have mentioned Jules is my great grandfather (his daughter was Marie "Jeanne" Sauzier, my grandmother). He was married to Elise Sinon. I live in Melbourne, Australia. Would you happen to have any pictures of the Sauzier's. Any additional information would be fantastic. Thank you Rachel. Regards Linda

A Louis Sauzier was apparently my paternal grandfather. Only found this out recently as I had little to do with my father who used the surname Saunders. He was adopted out. His mother was Margaret Hine who came from Victoria but gave birth in Sydney in about 1902. She told Births,Deaths and Marriages that the father came from Mauritius. Apparently not married.
Any assistance would be great. I have visited France seven times ; must be in the genes!

Hi Rachel,
My name is Linda and I am researching my family history and I was interested with the information you had on the Sauzier family. My grandmother was Marie Jeanne Sauzier and her father was Jules Sauzier. I assume he would have had other names, but not sure what they are. I have found some info on Sauzier's with a name of Marie Jean Baptiste Jules Sauzier and I am hoping that may be him. Your info came in handy as Marie Jean Baptiste Sauzier was brother to Ange Alfred Sauzier- your grandfather. Would you be able to confirm if you know or have heard if Ange had a brother Jules and that this Jules had a daughter called Marie Jeanne Sauzier. She was known as Jeanne to everyone and married Alexandre Dingwall. Any info would be great. Thanks. Regards Linda

Clive,

I am really grateful to you and apologise for all the trouble I've put you to. You've already given me more than I hoped for. My query about her age simply derived from the fact that I found an Emma Best who was born in India in the 1881 British Census and she was 24 years old. In Sydney, also, Miss Best lead a fairly physically demanding life running her dogs home and this lady (who would then have been in her mid-late 40s) fitted. Perhaps I'm completely wrong though!

Also, an article I read on the present owner of Moyenne (Brendan Grimshaw) suggested that while she wanted to be buried on her island it was her family who insisted on burying her on Mahe. It's interesting that there is no sign of any family in these records relating to her death. Her brother Cadogan Henry Best was in Sydney with her and returned to the Seychelles in October 1909. He must have left again before she died.

Anyway, again, many thanks,
John

Hi John

I checked at the cemetery office. She was buried in Section D of the Mont Fleuri cemetery. The register does not give the row or plot number, but they will check to see if more information is available. I should know by Tuesday. However as the plot was not purchased it is possible that the plot has been reused. The next time that I am at the Archive I will recheck her age.

Clive
Hello Clive,
Many and sincere thanks for getting this information for me. I appreciate it immensely. Very exciting to get her actual death date, though her age (about 86 years) is a bit of a puzzle as other evidence I've found suggests she was only in her 60s when she died. Oh well, where would the adventure be in historical research if there were no little mysteries to solve? Again,I am very grateful indeed.
John

This is very generous of you and I will be very grateful indeed for any information you find about her. She visited Sydney for several years (1906-1911) and established what was probably the first Stray Dogs Home in Australia. She was a most interesting and unconventional lady. I will await keenly but patiently any news you may post.
John

I am seeking information about an English-born (though don’t know exactly where) woman, Emma Wardlaw Best, who purchased an island (Moyenne) in the Seychelles ca.1899 and died there ca.1913. She made her island a refuge for unwanted dogs. She was buried I think on Mahe.

Does anyone know of her or have access to Seychelles cemetery records/transcripts or could advise me on whether it is even possible to get such information from afar?

I am especially keen to establish her birth and death dates and am not having much success. Any help or advice would be very gratefully received.

John (Australia)
