He is Monty and Alice's eldest.
My brother and I stayed with her and Laurie (2nd husband) in Canberra many years ago.
Norman also was in Canberra at the time and they all visited us in NZ on a few occasions.
Norman was a great bloke, born 1900 died 1992 (I think) and never married. Did a huge amount of work with the St Johns and Boys Brigade.

Where are you living now?

At the moment Keith Palmer (Dad's brother) is here in NZ visiting and will be back in the UK in a few weeks.

let me have your email and I will send you some pic's and other details.

cheers
Gary Palmer

hi, my Grandad married Edna Palmer, I didn't realise I had relatives 'just down the road' until too late to find anyone, my dad was always so secretive, although I think I met Basil and Joyce when I was very little. Also uncle Norman (I remember he sent some gifts from Oz, or brought them back from Edna, I can't remember) and I remember mum being terribly upset when he died.

Could someone confirm whether the name is Utsekanwa or Utsekanua? I'm not sure which is correct, one has been used in the thread subject and one within a couple of posts.

I'm trying to find out more about the family and would love to discover more, connect and see any photos.

Vicky

My name is Thomas Johnson, my ancestor was Ebenezer (Edward) Alfred Sargent came to America
in the late 1860s. We have alot of usa Sargent descendants here. The Sargent name did not carry on here as the last male descendant died in the 1920s. His parents were John and Ann Beeny and he was born in Hastings, England.
I would be interested in old photos if they exist from before 1900 of any of the other the brothers and sisters from any part of the world. Some brothers went to British Guiana, one to NZ, one to Nigeria, one to America and some stayed in the UK.
Keep posting more information or if someone wants to write to me directly I will add my email.
Virginia is the daughter of famous parents noted for their circus activities in the 19th century, they are very well documented.

The 1911 UK census record for one of the daughters Virginia Caroline Lambie (nee Newsome), living in Cleethorpes with several family members present show 2 unknown Newsome's:

Lulu Newsome born circa 1902 Hamburg, Germany (niece)
Ruby Newsome born circa 1906 Hamburg, Germany (niece)

As Virginia had no brothers, who can these 2 Newsome's be?

Both Lulu (Lucy) and Ruby can be found living in the USA at the time of the 1920 federal census with their father Albert Newsome born circa 1854 in Hamburg, Germany and also present is another daughter of Albert (sister of both Lulu and Ruby) with the name Zephora born circa 1899 in Belgium. So who are these 2 individuals also and how and who are they related too?

Any ideas?

I am Adekunle Soetan, the son of Jonathan Adeolu Soetan, son of Pa Adegunle Soetan(Papa London).I and my other siblings do not know much about our ancestral background due to the fact that we lost our father when we were just children and all effort to get genuine and unadulterated fact on our root has been futile all the while. But we know that our father has an only brother whom we were told left for US several years ago and our granny is from Ijero Ekiti.
On behalf of me and my other brothers, I use this medium to crave for adequate information as regards our lineage and possibly re-union.

Hi again, yes I would love copies of the newspaper story of George & Harriet in Oyo. My email address is sylvia-jean.harrison@ntlworld.com
By the way I wish they would stop altering the set up for the census's on Ancester I just get nicely used to it and they go change it again. Hopefully my daughter and son in law are coming for dinner on Sunday, hopefully theywill show me how to send George's photo to you.
Sylvia

Hi again Sylvia,

Oh dear, I went completely up the wrong track there didnt I...I think its was excitement lol...thanks for the correct info, much appreciated. I am still looking for his first wife but its obvious he met her married her and saw her death in between the censuses. I will have to keep on looking though, its too intriguing to let go. I have clippings of papers from Nigeria with George and Harriett in all about their work in Oya, if you would like copies, plus a drawing of the gravestone of Harriet with George being mentioned on it.....just let me know.
We can swap email addresses when you are ready to send George's picture to me.
Well its getting on for 7 so I have at least 5 hours to do my searching...once I get started I cant stop!
Hope to hear from you soon.
Love Jackie x
Hi Jackie, b elieve it or not I have just wrote a very long message to you and somehow lost it. Anyway I will start again. I may be wron g but I think Ellen was sin gle when she had George. She was the daughter of William Burton and Rachel Tillett who married in 1855 at the Independent Chapel in Wymondham. They had 5 children Emily 1856 Rachel 1861 Ellen 1863 Emma 1865 (my gt. grandmother) James 1869.
Rachel, Emma and James went to live in Eston, Middlesbrough.
On the 1881 census Ellen was a domestic wervant aged 19 years living in at The Grammar School, Gt. Yarmouth. I cannot find her on the 1891 census for either England or Scotland. The 1901 census is an educated guess as I knew George's "parents" lived in Edinburgh and his stepfather was a Station Master in Edinburgh. accordin g to my relatives who are now dead. I was told he was quite a celebrity in Edinburgh when he was made an Archdeacon and it was in all the papers, but I cannot find any trace of that. He was mentioned in the London Gazette. I do not know of any children. None were ever mentioned. I do know he had two wives who both died before him. Considering the conditions I am not surprised. He must have been a very hardy sort. Funnily enough there are two entries for Georges family in the 1901 census both for Edinburgh but for two different addresses all other information seems to be the same. As we cannot get the original entries on Ancester I have no way of checking which is correct, not that it matters where they lived but I always like to tie up loose ends. Sylvia.

Hi Sylvia,

Thank you for replying. Since I read your message, I've been glued to the computer, looking at hundreds of records, and have managed to find George's parents. They were George Burton born 1865 Wymondham, Norfolk, and Ellen Barber born 1866 in Wymondham, Norfolk. They were married in September 1889. Although our George was born in 1883, George Burton Senior was the father. They had a further child, a daughter, Florence Burton born 1890 in Wymondham, Norfolk. Ellen's parents were John Barber and Sarah Peel.

Can I ask where you got the information of George Hall and his wife, Ellen, and son Alexander? I will be going down that route when I get a chance.

As for our George's first wife, I havent found anything yet, but he must have married young because he married my ancestor in the early 1900's, although I am yet to find the exact year because it was in Nigeria. My family says they had 10 children!! I havent found any of them!! I can only assume they were all born in Nigeria. I am still looking into that part of the puzzle.

It is late now, well late for me anyway with having to get up for work tomorrow, so I'll be off to bed...but I will keep on looking for this family because I am intrigued.

Look forward to hearing from you soon...cant wait to see the photo.

Love Jackie x
Hello Jackie, at last I have got round to Family History and managed to get on the computer. Don't know a lot but his was born illegitimate at Wymondham, Norfolk in 1883 his mum was Ellen Burton from Wymondham, his went to live with his uncle James Burton in Eston, Middlesbrough and was on the 1901 census for Edinburgh as follows:-
34 Lower View Craig Row Edinburgh
George Hall 50
Ellen Hall 38
George Burton 18
Alexander Hall 1

George's occupation was Chemist!!

Now how did he afford to go to Durham University?
Did his unknown to me father contribute to his expenses?
He came from a very ordinary poor background and not an especially religous one so where did he get his calling from.
What I would like to know is where and when he married his first wife and when she died. I presume he met his second wife out in Nigeria. What I do know is that his wider family, the ones I come from in Yorkshire were very proud of him. I was told by someone I wrote to in Canada a few years ago that he was laid in Westminster Abbey when he died, which was when Princess Margaret was married, but I wrote to Westminster Abbey and they said they had no information on that but it was very unlikely. I know he was living in a Church Retirement Home in Chichester when he retired. If you know anymore than that I would love to know, however little the information. I will send a photo when I can get my son in law to show me. Regard Sylvia.

My husband grandmother was an Ellen Sargent married to Herbert Palmer, and his father was one of 9 children born to them. They lived in Weybridge Surrey where they are both buried. I love this hobby, finding out lots of things...as I said in my last email I dont know anything about George, date of birth, place of birth, death date, etc, so I'm hoping you can fill me in with it all, if you wouldnt mind, its so that I can fill in the gaps I have with my tree. I have some information about the couple that appeared in the newspaper in 1936, you are welcome to a copy. Also a write up about the College and their involvement, along with a picture drawing of Hannah's gravestone.
Look forward to hearing from you again
Jackie x
Hello Jackie,

Many thanks for your reply. My gt. grandmother Emma Burton was sister to George Burtons mother Ellen. I know he was illegitimate so how come he could afford to go to Durham University, they were just ordinary rather poor people from Norfolk. I did wonder if he had been supported by his father, I do not have his birth certificate so I do not know if he was named on it. He had rather a complicated young life and not a particularly religious background, but his adult life was a heroic one considering the times. I know the previous generation to me were very proud of him. Somebody who I was in contact with in Canada a few years ago, and he was 81 years old then, told me he had lain in Westminster Abbey when he died at the time Princess Margaret was married. I wrote to the Abbey but they did not know anything. Goodness knows how he got hold of that story. I will let you have the photo but please by patient I am not conversant with sending photos on the computer so I have to get my son in law to help me. Also I am new to looking at peoples trees on Ancester so if you could let me know how to do it I would be very pleased. I can give you more information if you wish. Do you have a copy of his will? I got a summery of it from "The Times" newspaper when he died. It was quite interesting although he did not mention any relatives. Talk to you soon. Sylvia.

Hi there Sylvia,

George Burton's wife, Hannah, was my great grand Aunt, sister to my great grandfather. I dont really know much about George, only what was in the newspaper at the time, a clipping which I have found. All I know about the couple is that they did missionary work in Nigeria and the story behind their work. I do have a photocopy of an original photograph of her. I found Hannah's grave, and on the headstone states about her being awarded the MBE, so I wrote to the office who deals with that side of things, and they gave me the dates but unfortunately had no other information. Obviously Hannah's earlier life I knew anyway. I would love to see a photograph of George, and any information you have about him. How are you related to him? You are welcome to view my tree if you wish.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
With best wishes,
Jackie

Guffantti Construction Nigeria

My name is Tunde and a Nigerian, I am trying to locate the Guffantti brothers who came to Nigeria in the Late 60's and started a construction company called Guffantti Construction Limited. The Company is no longer in existence in Nigeria but we need to certain information regarding the owners for a documentary we are putting together for the infrastructural development of Nigeria. Guffantti construction was involved in major Road projects and buildings in Nigeria and it would be a pride of honour for those great men who did the work back here. Please this is of utmost importance as we have very short time to commence the publication and documentary. Thank you while I await your response.
