Marcus Tulloch Sutherland in Warmbad

Marcus Tulloch Sutherland was born in Bathgate, Scotloand in 1868. He emigrated to South Africa, and in 1894 moved to Warmbad, German South West Africa. He is reported to have been a pioneer of the route from Kimberley across the Kalahari Desert to Warmbad. In 1903 he was apparently captured by the Hottentots. He died suddenly on 10 October 1911 in or near Warmbad.

I would be very grateful for any information about his time in Warmbad and his death, or for any suggestions for possible resources which I might research. I can read German fluently, so information in German would not be a problem.

Henning Thiele came to Namibia within the 1930s and lived in Windhoek.

I also found his last address in the register of the old white-pages: He lived until the early 1980s at "Peter-Mueller-Str. 34, Windhoek". The last entry I found for Henning Thiele, was in 1982/83.

Now, I am searching for any relatives of Henning Thiele, still living in Windhoek or for any other Informations dealing with his whereabout.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

David

John Charles William Sowden was Joseph William Sowden and Maryann Boucher Grover's 7th child. He was born at Abbie Vlaack on the 31 December 1874. Baptised by Reverand Morris 1875. This information I obtained from a copy of a document in Joseph Sowden's own hand writing when he was required by the laws at that time to register his children.

My grandfather (Alfred George Willis) was born in Kambeb in 1917 in Namibia according to his birth certificate - his father was the Station Master in Kambeb. I have tried to trace this but have been unable to find this town. I know place names changed from German to English - if anyone has a useful contact in Namibia for family tree research would be much appreciated. Many thanks and kind regards.

JAMES JOSEPH BEHAN b1860

I am searching my family tree back to Patrick b1787 Ireland. I have some big gapping holes I'm trying to fill.

My father is James Charles; his father/my grandfather Charles Joseph; his father/my ggrandfather James Joseph came from Kildare? in 1860 to NY. Most of that line has stayed in the NY area.

I believe James Joseph was the son of Patrick 3-17-1834 and his second wife. I think Patrick had 3 sons with wife #1 and my ggrandfather and his sister Lillian? (possibly married a Creighton)

From there, I think Patrick's (1834) parents were Thomas (1805) and Esther Burns (1804) from Dublin. And Thomas is connected to Patrick & Mary 1787 Wicklow.

There are several Patrick Behans in the 1700's and I'm finding it hard to figure out which line we descend from. I am also looking to link in Brendan Behan's line but don't know how his father Stephen is connected in.

Can anyone help me fill in the blanks?

Karen (Behan) Pierce
karenjpierce@earthlink.net

Some Comtesse have been going to southern Africa from France and Germany in the late 19th century (or even earlier...). If there is someone who already heard or read that name in this region, please please give me a hint! baie dankie....Simone Comtesse

Re: Eberhardt

Dear Carol: My maternal grandmother's maiden name (she died in 1975) was Minnie Florence Everhart (which had been Anglicized from the German EBERHARDT after coming to America). My email address is taken from her name. She traced the Eberhardt ancestry back to the 1300s in Wurretmberg, Germany, whose capital city is Stuttgart. The Eberhardt Dukes (there were at least three in the 14th century) had names like the WISE and another like Egomaniac (though in nicer form). I was stationed near Stuttgart for two years. Next to the bahnhof (train station) is a statue of Graf (the German name for Duke) Eberhardt Im Bart (with beard). It is a very large, carved statue (I have a picure of it I took in 1957) of Eberhardt sleeping in the arms of a peasant, indicating how loved he was by those he ruled. My grandmother had a book which I now have with a history, entitled THE LAND OF TECK. I personally saw the kneeling bench in a little town near Stuttgart called Urach, on which Duke Eberhardt kneeled in prayer. As to what year they came to the US, I am uncertain, though some of my grandfather's relatives fought in the American Revolution (she was a Daughter of the American Revolution). I can research more information if you desire. I am the only family member interested in geneology. Sincerely, Joe Steiner, 13909 Rio Hondo Circle, 801B, La Mirada, Ca 90638

Sailing to Namibia in 1905-1911. Berg and Kröger

My mother Solveig Berg was born in Lüderitzbucht in 1911, and her mother's name was Hanna Berg. Her father's surname was probably Peter Kröger.

One of Solveig's godfathers was Anna Kröger, b. Johnsen, married to Johanes Amandus Kröger. They resided in Fredrikstad, Norway, in 1900.

I have no other definite information about Hanna, but some indication that she is identical to Hanna Amalie Berg, b. 1 Apr 1869 in Eidskog, Norway. She landed at Ellis Island 29 Jun 1905, destined for her brother Hans Berg, Grand Rapids, Wisc. In 1917, she lives in Oslo, Norway.

I wonder whether anyone knows how to trace people travelling from the US to South Africa (Cape Town?) or possibly Lüderitz, Swakopmund or Walvis Bay in Deutch Südwest Afrika. Further if anyone knows any thing about Kröger or Berg in Lüderitz in 1905-1914.

Regards,
Jens Kaasbøll

I was looking up my daughter, Annalise Eberhart, online, when I saw your message. We actually don't know much about our Eberhart origins, as my husband's family has been in the U.S. for many generations. Would love to know anything you know, though. Sincerely, Carol
