Do you know anything about Ryland Charles Lamberty?

He was born on 22 May 1908 in Edinburgh, son of Henry Gilbert Lamberty, medical student, and Louie Torrie Murphy, and he too became a doctor.

In 1940 he married Philomene F D Cook, and they had two children: Irene L L, born 1941 and David Charles, born 1942, both in Edinburgh. They must have divorced because Philomene died in Edinburgh in 2011. David married Rosemary Twydell in Edinburgh in 1969.

In 1950 he married a relative of mine, Helen Erskine Ferguson, in London. They had a son named John Martin Lamberty, born in London in 1951. Helen died in 1966, and Ryland married Betty E Lambert in 1975.

Ryland died on 5 February 1996 in London.

John married Jane Francis Thomson in York in 1978, but they too must have divorced because Jane F Lamberty married Jeffrey Chegwin in York in 1984.

Re: PIERRUS

Hi Stephenie, lovely to hear from you and so great to finally come across someone with my family name COVELE!!!

I havent explored the PIERRUS side, but there are others on this board who have quite a bit of information on this family name, but not sure how this branch connects at this point.

I have compiled a bit of information on Jules and his descendants, I will look for it. From what I found, it seems that he had been married before and had had at least 3 daughters, one of whom was the Francoise Ida you mention. This means that Fernand Louis had half-siblings.

I am very intrigued about the bible you have, and the information it contains - I am hoping that I might find the link I have been looking for as I have hit a brick wall in my research. Jules is one of 3 COVELE men from Mauritius I have been unable to connect to each other - perhaps the family bible will unravel this mystery? How exciting after all these years of searching for information!! I am hoping that you might share this with me. In turn I am happy to exchange what I have.

My e-mail is renee@hbmachinetools.com - hope to hear from you soon :)

Kind Regards
Renee

Hi Renee, I am so excited to have come across your post dated 14 May 2012. I am trying to unravel the mystery of my husband's family. His grandfather was Fernand Louis COVELE, son of Jules and Marie Ezilda PIERRUS. Do you perhaps have any information on Alcide PIERRUS and Jeanne Yvon PIERRUS.

Also Jules' history is proving very difficult. We know he died on 6th April 1938 and according to the bible he had a sister named (aunt) Ida. We think this is the same Francoise Ida ARMAND (born COVELE) husband Andre ARMAND. Ida died 23rd January 1924. We were always told that Jules was of French origin, but this may be Mauritius.

Fernand Louis COVELE died on 8th November 1966 and he was married to Anna Maria Katrina DE BRUIN d. 12th July 1982.

This little bible has proved invaluable.

If you have anything to add to this I would love to hear from you.

Kind regards, Stephenie Barfoot

HI,

You could try Association of Mauritian Archives (its in French but you can get Google to translate), I will have a quick look for you now and get back to you or you can see www.amamu.org (NB. I have had a look their are a few Lazare's called Marie but not with Irma as a second name. I saw a Marie Edith and a Maria Eliane. If you go onto the site its in French but if you click on Google Translate you will get a fair idea of what is available.

Also, you can request information from National Archives (Civil Service) in Mauritius but it does take a while (think in terms of months rather than weeks). The section is called "Registry" and their direct email is arc@mail.gov.mu
When I got some information from them they only provided the Reference numbers and said if I wanted birth certificates I must request information from Civil Status Office- civstat@mail.gov.mu.

Anybody have any ideas on records from Mauritius. Can you see if you can find anything about the Lazare family. My 2 G grandmother Marie Irma was born about 1831 and married a William Gray and went to Ireland and then to New Zealand where she had more children, lost her husband remarried to Zach MEADS. At one stage due to her family dying her family sold up a sugar cane farm and came to NZ to help out but seems they did not stay due to the soon to be new husband!

this has been on the Mauritius Board for over a year an nothing has come of it - so trying again.

Jerome Delphin

Hello,
I am trying to find my 3Xgreat grandfather Jerome Delphine (or John Delphin), “..But he was an ex-slave so would have been known as a 'person of colour' in Mauritius at the time…” The family consisted of Father, Mother, Jerome, his brother Augustine, one other brother and two sisters. He was transported from Mauritius to Australia in 1844 aboard the Ocean Queen, he came with his brother Augustine Delphine and their accomplice Benjamin Zaire after being found guilty of “theft of money with aggravation from Mr Peyronnet, Court of Assizes 8th September 1843. Jerome, carpenter, living in Port Louis, Augustin, 'cocher'employed by and living with Sr Eugene Lucas in Pamplemousses. Jerome married Catherine Cronin on 2 June 1851 at St George’s Church, Hobart, Tasmania. The couplel had 9 children 3 of whom failed to survive and one of whom is my great great grandmother Julia Mary Jane Delphin.

I have been searcing and searching and would be thrilled to find some record of the Delphine family in Mauritius. Any direction would be really appreciated.
Re: Tracing Ambrose family in mauritius

I am also interested in an Ambrose family in Mauritius. Jonathon Ambrose (b abt 1830- d at sea 1872, buried Georgetown, Ascension island) married my greatX3 aunt Mary Jane Newman (b 1833, Isles of Scilly, Cornwall - ?).

Jonathon Ambrose worked for Blythe Brothers, traders in Mauritius. This is recorded on his gravestone: In Memory of Jonathan Ambrose of Mauritius/ For upwards of 25 years the esteemed assistant of Blythe Bros & Co of that Island who died on board the ship "Sea Breeze" 18th August 1872 aged 42 years.

His death is also memorialised on the Isles of Scilly:
"JONATHAN AMBROSE, Merchant, son-in-law of RICHARD & ANN NEWMAN, died at sea in the Indian Ocean, on his passage from Mauritius to Scilly, and was buried at the Island of Ascension, aged 30 years. Beloved & respected by all who knew him."
I've found nothing of his widow Mary Jane Newman who seems to have disappeared, maybe remaining in Mauritius and dying there.

The name Ambrose was added as a middle name to 2 Newman children b 1861 and 1868, ie before Jonathon's death.

Mary Jane Newman was the daughter of ship's captain Richard Newman and probably she met Jonathon on one of her father's trips which passed through Mauritius. They had one child that I know of:
Anne Alicia Ambrose b 1865 Mauritius, d 1925 London after marrying 3 times. She had 2 sons by her 1st husband.

I found this Ambrose reference in Mauritius:
In a history of cricket in Mauritius: Mr T Ambrose was the inaugural honorary secretary of the combined Union and Mauritius Cricket Clubs which met for the first time in 14 May 1856 at the Hotel D'Europe, Port Louis. From Google Books copy of a 1914 book by Allister Macmillan, Mauritius Illustrated: Historical, Descriptive, Commercial published 1914, W.H. & L. Collingridge. page 336.
Anybody found anything more?

Jenni in Australia

Oh boy!!! Firstly, I live in England, in the north west, in a tiny place you will never have heard of called Heath Charnock!
I WAS on Fbook but came off after my account was hacked ......and to be honest I was starting to spend far too much time on it anyway!! If you are on FB, are you in contact with Miggy and co in Canada?
I see I shall have to "interrogate" David's mother but will need to pick a good day; she is 85 now and sometimes has difficulty thinking straight.Maybe Chantal, Gab's daughter may know something, I will mail her in SA. We too have heard that Marie Riviere came from Reunion but I have never found the exact link.
Got to go now, I have my very sick sister staying with us and I need to sort her meds out. my direct email is "
eunicehawkins@me.com
xxxxx

Oh yes, you have a definite link! My husband David is the son of Marie Jacqueline Bouic, born 1927 and sister to Gabbie Courtiade, Guy's late wife, and Geoffrey Hawkins. Our combined tree is under "Eunice and Davis'd combined tree, updated September 2012" if you haven't found it yet. Most of the info I have on the Bouic side came from a document from Mauritius - Societe de l'histoire de ille Maurice; this possibly cane via Gab, certaily she added a type written part at the back but some of it was inaccurate.
Am curious which Marie Riviere m Willy Horeau? I have 2 Marie Rivieres but married to Bouics? Unless this was a 2nd marriage? Do you still live in Mauritius? Another of Davids cousins , Jean-Michel Quevauvilliers has just emailed me some photos of floods in Port Louis :-(
Lovely to hear from you :-) xx

I am just wondering if you have found many Standley's in Mauritius in your search.

My Maternal Grandmother was known as Annie Standley and she was married to Jean-Claude Martial. Their first daughter Una (my mother) was born in 1921. It is possible that she could have been named after Una Pennington-in your family tree? Maybe a coincidence.

I think Annie had some brothers and sisters but don't know many details.

Hi

This is probably not related to your enquiry but while doing some search on my ancestors i found the name 'Hullard A' on the birth certificate of my great grandfather born 27.7.1882. Mr A Hullard was the registrar officer at Centre De Flacq Registration Office.

Regards
Amit
