I am a writer and I'm working on a book about 15 former Kentucky slaves who went to Bassa Cove, Liberia in 1836. There were two family groups: the Majors and the Harlans (or Harlands). For 15 years, they corresponded with their former master, and he in turn, sent them seeds, tools, cloth, medicine and other supplies to help them in their new life. Many of their letters still exist in a museum and I will be using them in this book. The last letter was sent in December 1851, and the former master died a few months later.
To help me finish my book, I would love to learn what happened to them after the letters ended. It would be particularly exciting to locate any descendants. To do genealogical research in the US, I would turn to birth, death, marriage records, census documents, land and tax records, etc. I've not yet been able to locate any such records or even depositories for such records in Liberia. Does anyone know of someone who can help me or any online resources?
