Colin Hill born England 1926 died Johannesburg in 1970's

Colin R Hill was born in 1926 in England. He was only son of my Great Uncle and Aunt, Oscar and Olive Hill. They lived most of their lives in Stratford-on Avon but Colin spent most of his adult life in southern africa.

I believe Colin spent some time in the Navy before marrying Erica on 23 February 1957 at All Saints Cathedral, Nairobi, Keyna. Colin and Erica lived for sometime in Keyna and then what was then Rhodesia before moving again to Johannesbury, South Africa.

They had two daughters Cynthia J Tarry (nee Hill) and Alison Hill. I think the girls may have been born in Keyna but I am not sure.

Colin died in South Africa sometime in the late 1970's. I was a teenager at the time but was aware that there was something about his death that the adults did not want to discuss. I believe he was a Free Mason but my memory could be playing tricks there.

Cynthia and her husband Jack Tarry emigrated from South Africa in 1989 to New South Wales and then moved to Victoria, Australia possibly in 1990. Erica and later Alison also emigrated to Australia in 1994. By then Cythia was living in Queensland Au.

I would be very grateful for any information that anyone can find about this family. I met Erica and Cynthia once, way back in the early 1970's and would dearly like to find out more about them and maybe even manage to make contact with them.

many thanks for reading this
Helen Grist

I cannot find any information on Lichaun with the exception of her being the mother of Philip and Jenny. Did you have any additional information? Was she Lumbee? African returned to Africa?

Also, Philip's father Steven was married to a Lumbee Indian, no name posted. Do you have any info there?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Edith Ellen Chandler marraige/ death South Africa

Edith Chandler was born around 1869 in Worthing Sussex, England her parents were William Chandler and Ellen Hawes.
I can trace her to the 1891 census where she was working as a cook in Teddington, Middlesex, England.
There is a story in the family that one of my grandfathers aunts went to South Africa to marry, but when arrived she found the man she was going to marry was already married.
It was said she died of a broken heart.
Edith is the only one I cannot trace after 1891. There are passengers list with a miss Chandler going to Africa, but cannot really say that,s the proof.
Can anyone be so kind to look up a death for a Edith Chandler in South Africa.

I have 2 women who are found in some records of the Dutch Reformed Church in Cape Town.
These women are mentioned in the title of 'other' and when I look at it, the records say that the names are for membership. What kind of membership would have been under the Church? All of the names on those lists appear as woman of varying ages and one in the mid 1700's and the others in 1805, 1863. Has anyone run across the same thing?

It could be worth taking a look in the SA Telephone directories - this is not a common name and there are only 27 entries for the whole country. Might be worth writing a few polite letters - would not cost much.

Glad to know you have made progress, hope ancestorsonboard was useful. I do not think you are right about people leaving South Africa in the 1960s - at that time many Whites were still convinced they could carry on "as was" for ever. In fact there were still a lot of peole going to South Africa. During the last twenty years many people have left - obviously few of the age your folk would be - because unless they are in private business they are finding themselves discriminated against in favour of Blacks - the reverse of what it used to be and they find it as unpleasant as the Blacks did before. I think many of them have headed for Australia mostly because of the climate.

I’m looking to find out my family genealogy. Both my mother and father were born and raised in Eritrea, but are not full Eritreans. My mother’s side is also mixed with Egyptian, and Punjab, while my father’s side is mixed with Italian, Yemeni, Saudi Arabian, and Turkish. So, as you can tell I am quite uncertain as to not only where I come from, but also how to start my journey. So, if anyone can help me figure out where exactly to begin my search that would be greatly appreciated.

What exactly is it that you are looking for? You ask for passenger lists. He is recorded as passenger on the Arundel Castle leaving Southampton in 1936 on "ancestorsonboard" but you really cannot expect anyone else to buy credits to get the full details for you. It costs nothing to find the basic facts and very little for further details, but it is not clear exactly what you want, which makes it difficult to help.

I have a feeling I answered this somewhere else - as well as finding his marriage? Look up ancestorsonboard. Very simple format. A D. Mercer born in 1913 travelled to the Cape on the Arundel Castle in 1936 - basic details. If you want more detail you will have to buy some credits which I am not going to do.

African-American Noah Smith of Gregg and Rusk County

I am searching for information on Noah Smith(1861) he is my ggrandfather married to Lucinda Sanders in 1907 Gregg County, Texas. I found him in Rusk County,Texas 1910 census with his wife and kids, also living with him was his 80 year old father Bob Smith. In 1920 he and his family were living in Gregg County. I'm guessing sometime after 1920 he died because his wife Lucinda Smith was listed as a widow in the 1930 census. She was living with two of her daughters Minnie Smith(Boyd) and Ordella Smith in Gregg County.
In the 1870 census I found a Noah Smith in Rusk County with father Robert Smith and mother Lear. 1880 there was a Noah Smith father name Bob, mother Leah, sisters: Mary Lee,and Mintie Smith, brothers: Spencer,Lonzo,Tillman,Washington,Robert and two nieces Fannie Lee and Frona Lee. I could not find a Noah nor Bob in the 1900 census and I am not sure the 1870-1880 family that I am looking at is really my family because no one in the family could give me any information. I can't find death certificates on Noah or Bob, I only have one on Lucinda Smith she died 1n California in 1960.

Hello,
I do have a copy of a photograph which shows your grandfather Thomas Clemett! The original is held by Sheila Fewings, grand daughter of James Henry Fewings, but I have her permission to pass my copy on to you(don't expect high quality!). I also have a couple of small group photos taken by my grandfather, but they are un-named and un-dated, and on one the faces are heavily shaded by their hats. (Also my grandfather Clifton Laver made two trips out there, so there may be some different people on the team.)

However I am very happy to share these with you, I also have a copy of an article written about Sheila Fewings' trip out to see the Von Gotzen, now renamed the SS Liemba. I hope you knew that the von Gotzen is still sailing and being useful, although I have heard that retirement is imminent.
Have you also seen that your grandfather is on the passenger lists - ss Merkara, sailed from London 15/5/1925, Fewings, Davis, Laver, Clemett, Shepherd and Penter (the names are often a bit mangled). We haven't managed to find when they returned.

If you like to contact me directly by email on actspicer@gmail.com, I can send you the images.

Good to hear from you!
Clare Spicer, nee Laver.

Wherever these kids went they certainly did not go to "Rhodesia" in the early 1800s - for the simple reason that no such place existed. Cecil Rhodes supported settlement in "Rhodesia" (an area much larger than the current Zimbabwe, which has the borders of the old "Rhodesia/Southern Rhodesia) in 1894/95, Salisbury/Harare in Mashonaland and Bulawayo in Matebeleland, both became municipalities in 1897 and then there was just a handful of whites for many years. The administration was by the British South Africa Company until 1923 when Southern Rhodesia (as opposed to Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia), beame a self-governing British colony. There was a Fairbridge scheme which took children to Southern Rhodesia, but I would not want to be dogmatic about the details. I think it may have been taking children from the 30s, and again after WW2. If you google Fairbridge Rhodesia I am sure you will find more information. They may have also been going to South Africa but not anywhere else because all the other "British" territories were either Colonies, Protectorates or Mandates and would only have ex-pats in the administration. There was some settlement in Kenya - but rather exclusive and certainly not for homeless children. Rhodesia became Zimbabwe in 1980.

Hi again,

I forgot to mention something. The LEWIS children and the CORKILL children who went to the Liverpool Sheltering Homes in 1873 were not all orphans. The CORKILL children had recently lost their mother, but their father was alive and was a mariner. He was a quartermaster, but I've never been able to find out what kind of ship Evan CORKILL worked on.

The only clue I have is that, when his children were being shipped to Canada in 1874, he was on a ship which was on its way to Africa !

It has occurred to me this week that he .might. have been involved with one of the ships transporting the "child migrants" to Africa and South Africa.

(I know that in the early 1800's, the child-migrants were going to Rhodesia. And I know that country much later became known as Zimbabwe. I do not know whether the children went to other countries within Africa.)

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

UK's "Child Migrant Scheme" (1830's to 1970's) to Africa

Hello,

I'm curious if anyone is researching or learning about the UK's "Child Migrant Scheme." I'm told it basically went on for about 150 years, and from 1830's to 1970's. And the UK's .needy children. were shipped out to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, South Africa, and Malta, that I know of.

From 1860's to 1940's, over 100,000 of the children were shipped to Canada. My great-grandparents were part of them. "Stanley" LEWIS and Mary CORKILL (and her siblings) were born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England ~1860. When the Liverpool Sheltering Homes opened in 1873, they were placed there. In 1874, Mary and her siblings, and Stanley and 3 LEWIS girls were all shipped to Nova Scotia and all went to different towns.

I've read that about 150,000 .needy children. were shipped out of the UK. So, I'm guessing that the other 50,000 went to Australia and South Africa, etc.

There is information on-line about them. The children going to Canada became known as "British Home Children" (or "Home Children, Canada"). Those terms are searchable. And, there has been a BHC List and Board for at least 10 years. So, there is a lot of information in the archives of that List and Board - especially from 2000 to 2007.

About a year ago I started up a new List for Child-Migrants-UK but it is not yet an active List.

www.rootsweb.com

Thank you for your time.

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

(on Lists and Boards for 10 yrs.; now an Admin for 9 Lists and 3 Boards, also including the CORKILL List)

(there are several variations on the CORKILL name, including CORKHILL and CORNHILL, etc.)

I viewed the slave manifest of this schooner and saw the name of an arrival Hector which was my grandfather's given name. I believe the slave Hector maybe my great great grandfather because our family surname is also McLaughlin. This is also the name of the shipper or owner (who bought the slaves?) The confusion is that the manifest says port of departure Wilmington and port of arrival New Orleans.
My father's family origins are North Carolina and I currently have family living in Wilmington. Were the slaves dropped off in Wilmington and then the Rival headed for New Orleans?

Craig,
Just a suggestion from an "old colonial". Firstly if you google "Northern Rhodesia" there are quite a few sites which might throw up something. Secondly, remember Northern Rhodesia was a "Protectorate" under British rule - Southern Rhodesia was a "Self-Governing Colony" - which means that many official records would have been the responsibility of the Colonial Office (now extinct!) so it might be worth writing to the Library of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and asking what, if any, records exist. Good luck.

Hi

I know your message is many years old regarding this family but I have only recently seen it as I've become interested in tracing my family tree.

I'm not sure if my family fits into this but my maiden name is Hampshire and my father has told me stories of his family in Rhodesia in the early years. They are based in Cape Town now but I think there may be a connection. If you would like to get in touch with my father (Robert Clive Hampshire, born 1937) please contact me and I will give you his contact details.

On my mother's side, her grandfather was one of the early pioneers to Rhodesia with a surname of Wolhuter. I have no immediate details yet but I know my mother has a certificate naming her as the granddaughter of a pioneer.

Anyway, I'm not sure if you're still interested but if so, I would be happy to give you any details I can.

Best Regards

Louise Dykes (nee Hampshire)
