My Grandmother told me her father was from Ethiopia. His name was Ezekiel "Zeke" McCray which is probably a mispronounciation of the name Mekuriya. He was born in 1886, he died in 1966 in m Miss.USA. I've been told that many Etiopians left their country on missionary ships to Europe and the USA. I also understand that these Ethipians stayed and bagan families put continued to stay in touch with relatives back home by telegraph at the post office.
