hey Teri,

My father born in Alexandria and left it in 56. To Italy.
His grandfather ( father side ) was Nelson Dello Strologo.
As far as I know we found ancestors in Livorno , Tuscany , Italy 1700-1750.
A rabbi here in Jerusalem says he heard this surname as originally not from Italy but from Egypt , middle age period, related to cabalistic rabbis and astrologers.

PHOCAS Yvonne & Muriel in Cairo

Seeking any information on a MADAMME YVONNE PHOCAS & her daughter MURIEL who were living in Cairo, Egypt in about 1932-1935.

This lady was a housekeeper to the Inspector of Police in Cairo at this time and is mentioned in his Will dated 1932. Perhaps this lady was a widow but I no nothing more apart from her address also mentioned in the Will, i.e. 35 Sharia el Zaher, Cairo. Who was she and did she stay in Egypt? A GEORGE PHOCAS has been found via passenger lists, (bn. 1904 of Greek nationality), was in Egypt 1938. If you can help me I would be so pleased to learn more.

Also mentioned in the same Will are Mr. CHARLES SAXBY O.B.E. and Mr. THOMAS SHAFTO of the United Film Service. I believe the former to be CHARLES HENRY SAXBY OBE m to Miriam Heath who spent most of his adult life in Egypt. There were apparently many 'cinemas' named 'SHAFTOS' used by allied troops in North Africa.

Hi Phil,
I posted a lot of the info about Daniel on the Convict website.
James Leitch and Isabella md Alexandria, information gained from death certificate of James and Isabella's daughter Isabella Harriett Yeo. James was a captain of trading and whaling ships. Isabella's father,Captain David Dawson, also ships captain often took one or more of his daughters with him on his voyages. Both Leitch and Dawson from Scotland. Leitch could very well have been crew member on a Dawson ship before gaining his captaincy or the couple could have met in port. Won't know until research reveals connection. Trying to find marriage registration which is proving difficult. Their children were John Dawson Leitch, sailed to America not heard from again; Mary (my Great Grandmother) md Duncan Lamont in Bathurst, Isabella Harriet md William Yeo, Bathurst. Youngest 3 children, David, Frances and Lucy Leitch, went with mother Isabella when she left James and partnered with Daniel Marley in Victoria where the twins were born. Eldest son went to sea and 2 eldest daughters raised by James' sister, Jane Whitton, in Bathurst. I have a lot of info on these girls, the Leitchs and the Dawsons. If you want this info, let me know.
Regards Maroomba

Thanks Maroomba. I would be more interested in Daniel's convict info - have you seen http://www.convictrecords.com.au/convicts/marley/daniel/2703...

It's unlikely there was a marriage between Daniel & Isabella if she had been previously married to James Leitch. They were married in Alexandria. In Egypt? What were they doing there? And what became of their children?

My info is that Daniel Marley died in 1889 at the "Yarra Bend Lunatic Asylum" in Melbourne. Isabella died in 1863 at "Loddon, near Inglewood" which is interesting as her first grand daughter, Hannah Fletcher, was born there in 1863.

Daniel & Isabella had twins, Daniel & Hannah, and Hannah is my wife's great-great grandmother. Can't find anything about her twin brother Daniel except there was a Daniel Marley living in the Darling Downs area of Queensland about 1903-1908.

Phil.

Re: Great Grandparents

Hi there,

Find My Past will only list your grandfather's birth if he was a British national. These records originate with the British Consulate in Egypt.

If he was not British, you have a couple of different options.

Compulsory civil registration in Egypt began relatively late. Until then, different nationalities in Egypt kept their own records of births, marriages and deaths within the community. So if your grandfather was deemed an Italian or French national, say, it is best to contact the archives of their respective consulates.

You may also wish to try contacting the Jewish Community in Egypt to ask for information, although I have found it very difficult to get a reply from them.

(For Catholic records, it's also worth trying church records such as St. Catherine's Alexandria)

Generally speaking, getting information out of Egypt is very painstaking although I have had some success with three different Egpytian families (one Jewish, including the name Levy) of late.

Please let me know if you need any help. I am a family historian specialising in Jewish family history.

Best wishes, Naomi Leon
www.researchroots.co.uk

Hi Zoe,

As this thread attests, the best way I have found of getting hold of vital records in Egypt is through the archives of various consulates - French and Italian, mostly. I am currently working on three different Italian Egyptian families. You should be able to find contact details online, although getting a reply at all is a challenge in itself - whether or not they have relevant records about your family.

I have made a few contacts which have proved helpful.
I am trying to assist a friend find her family with roots in Alexandria, Egypt without much success. The surname is BARUCH and they seem to have emigrated to Sao Paulo, Brazil, as well as Paris, possibly after WW2. I have a photo of Mr Baruch - the father - and he appears to be wearing a Masonic sash and medals.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I've been researching 2 Egyptian families recently and have been able to obtain quite a lot of information about English, French and Italian nationals in Egpyt through the archives of their respective consuls. As well as vital records, I've obtained a great deal of detail through citizenship/ naturalisation records. The (dwindling) Jewish community in Egpyt also keeps its own records but have been very unresponsive.

It seems to be true that Egypt is a bit of a black hole in terms of records, but much depends on the background of the particular Egyptian family. Let me know if I can help.

Naomi Leon
www.researchroots.co.uk

I have written to embassies in Alexandria/Cairo without luck, they only suggested approaching a private detective, charging outrageous rates with no guaranteed success. Decided against that option. C'est la vie.

Seeking any information on the Greek surname Calni, Velissariou and Atanasiou

I am trying to find information on my Greek grandmother Anna Calni who was born in Imbros to Vassilli and Paraxrevoula Atanasiou. She moved to Egypt with her family and married my Grandfather, William Henry Charles Frederick Smith. She has three sons, George, Cecil and Harry. Anna is believed to have died in Egypt in 1936. I was told she was sent to a mental institution in Alexandria Egypt and committed suicide there. But my Grandfather remarried and it states on this documentation that he was divorced, not widowed.

If anyone knows anything or can lead me to anyone, any site, etc I would be incredibly grateful!

Many thanks
Tania

I am looking for any information regarding my grandmother. I think her maidan name was Laricia. Her married name was Marguerite Ghinis she married Alexander Ghinis and had a son named Gilbert George he was born in 1942 in Cairo Egypt. Marguerite died when Gilbert was 5 or 6 years old. After her death Alexander took Gilbert to the U.S. Here are some names that I think may be related to Alexander.Giorgo Ghinis, Kosta Ghinis, Zafiria Papalekatoy, Eleni Syrakis, Elektra (Lillie) Moubarec. I have no information about her except a photo of her and my father (Gilbert) not long before she died. I don't even know what she died from. She may have been born in Italy. Any info would help.

I too have Alexandrian ancestors and am fortunate enough to have a birth certificate from 1918 and my parent's marriage certificate from 1955. The birth was recorded at the Sanitary Office of Goumrok, part of the Public Hygiene Services of the Alexandrian Municipality. Assuming the records weren't destroyed in WWII, all that sort of stuff may be moldering on a neighborhood basis, which makes things more difficult. Furthermore, one of my half-sibs went to Alexandria and tracked down living cousins. No one seemed to know anything about family history or seemed interested.

Roxana Salem
Hi,
There was a ship called the "BARRABOOL" arriving at London on 22nd Dec 1933, and on board were two passengers you might be interested in

Mary Glover H.D. Aged 27
Nellie Glover Scholar Aged 11

It says that their last country of permanent residence was Egypt. They had boarded the ship at Port Said, and it gives an address they were going to, which is:

Fernedene, Staincross, Barnsley, Yorkshire
--------------------------------------------------
I looked for a marriage for Mary (or Maria) Glover, and she definitely married James A Donnan 1st qu 1934 at Barnsley, Yorkshire - which agrees nicely with the town the ships passenger list said she was going to.

The reason I say that it is definitely her is that the brief marriage record says James A Donnan married Mary Glover or D'Andria. Marriage certificate no: 9C 408.

Hope this helps a little,

Brian

You might want to contact juliusborg73@hotmail.com; he has a data base of Maltese in Egypt so he could have some info for you.

Daniel

Hi

I have a Guiseppi Vassallo born around 1896 in Cairo, Egypt who married my great great aunt Guiseppa Galea. I don't know who his parents are but they emigrated to Australia after WW2.
Researching my Maltese family in Egypt has been quite a challenge!

Sarah
