Pereira, Moraes, Dos Santos, Dos Reis, Conceicao

Hello! Looking for any information regarding my great grandfather, Luis Daniel Pereira, born September 30, 1888, on Santo Antao. On immigration paperwork his fathers name is listed as Pedro Carlos dos Reis. I'm wondering if this man is a step-father, as his dad deserted the family and his mom later remarried. My great grandfather married my great grandmother, Maria, born February 19, 1893 on Santo Antao. Maria's full maiden name was said to be Maria Conceicao Moraes, but after her death, the last name "dos Santos" was brought up as a potential family name. On her death certificate, it lists her mother's maiden name as "dos santos" and her fathers last name as Moraes. On her immigration paperwork, her father's name is listed as Luis Jose (or Joao - we are uncertain) de Moraes. Before moving to New bedford, Massachusetts, my great grandparents had 3 children by the names of Mathias Daniel Pereira (b. February 25, 1912), Solteiro Daniel Pereira (b. April 22, 1913), and Maria da Luz Pereira (b. 1914). Any information would be great!

Hello! This is a long shot, but out of desperation, here it goes. My great grandfather was Luis Daniel Pereira, born on Santo Antao in 1888, but moving to Sao Vicente and working at the harbor (apparently this harbor was a draw for his single mom looking for work - maybe this is the major port you are talking about?) on the boat docks in Mindelo. He got this job through is step-father who was a crane operating engineer, unloading coal from the ships. We don't have any certain names beyond my great grandfather, Luis Daniel Pereira, however, when my great grandfather moved to Massachusetts in 1914, he lists a Pedro Carlos dos Reis as his Father and next of kin in the place from whence he came (Cape Verde). I'm wondering if this man listed was his step-father? And if so, has anyone heard this name? And is there a connection to the Dos Reis' that are being talked about here? Any tips at all would be great!

Hi Dave
Thanks for your reply. You are right my family never settled in Hawaii.
They lived in new jersey and mass. Ancestry somehow linked my father's
family with yours. You are way ahead of me on the search, so I don't
know how I can help. I wish you luck and maybe along the way we may find a link.
Emily Reis

Hi Anna, I just recently saw your posts from 2011, so am sorry I haven't responded sooner. I had quit Ancestry for a couple of years, which might explain why I missed them.

You definitely have lots of information which implies that we may be related. One piece of info below prompts a question. Since Manuel arrived in Hawaii in 1875, after being a whaler for a couple of years, that means he left Brava before 1873, so if he was born in 1854 he would have been no more than 20 years old. He did have his first child, Alexander (not Arthur) in 1885, and remained in Hawaii for the rest of his life, as did his whole family. So I would be surprised if any records of his children's births are found outside of Hawaii. So, unfortunately, it seems unlikely we are talking about the same Manuel Gil Dos Reis. But perhaps they were other close relatives of each other?

Are the records you refer to mostly from Cape Verde,or somewhere else? Do you have a contact who can do further research on this?

One other potential complication to this story. Although in some articles about Manuel that I have where he states he came from Portugal or Cape Verde, I just found the marriage certificate of his youngest daughter, Helena, my grandmother, which states her father's place of birth as "Azores, Portugal". So I don't know whether to start looking there, or just assume she was mistaken..???

Again, thanks for all the good info. I look forward to further communication and apologize again for the delay...

Kind regards,
Dave Kump

P.S. I am married to Rebecca DaCosta, whose grandparents were from the Azores... so perhaps there is some connection there if not the Reis line...

Hi Emily,
I just saw your post today, so sorry for the delay. I hope you can help me fill in some of the gaps in our Reis family history. Unfortunately, I am pretty sure that "our" Alexander is not a relative of yours, since he never married nor had any children and remained in Hawaii his whole life.

I have heard from another person, from Massachusetts, who also believe's we have common ancestors, from Brava, Cape Verde. He told us that Manuel had a sister, and perhaps a brother, though we've not been able to confirm either of those facts yet. So any documents or further stories which shed light on events between 1850 and 1870 would be welcome.

Kind regards,
Dave

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your wonderful pictures and story. I maybe able to add to it. What I have on my wall is a portrait of the Reis brothers. Abel, Frank, joe, Cesar, arthur, john and Epalto aka mano. I also have a beautiful portrait of their mother Mariana Senna Reis. They were all born in brava. The picture of Mariana was given to me and my sisters by Isabel Reis, uncle Joe's wife before she passed. The brothers Picture also hangs proudly in my family 's home in Praia cabo Verde. Since you have a head start on this family, can you tell me if your Alexander (poki ) from Hawaii is my Alexander, their father and husband to my Mariana.
Thanks

Hi, just wondering if you could help me locate via your Cape Verde records, information on the family of Antonio Pereira Vitorino de Barres: a Portuguese of African descent born in the Cape Verde Islands who arrived in Fakaofo to trade for August Unshelm (aka A.Unshelm, a german firm) in mid 1863. He travelled between Fakaofo and Samoa where he also had interests until sometime in the 1870s. He married a samoan lady and had a son, Jose.

He also had a sister who stayed back home, not sure but her name could have been Maria who had married someone with last name Perez. In this marriage, Maria had a son who also went to the islands called Sese Pereira with his Uncle (Antonio's brother), Penue or Peter, who was either a merchant or captain of a ship. Sese never returned home.

I'm not sure but I think there was another brother Eugene.

Thanks, I'm interested in the Cape Verde connections.

cheers, Berny
While researching my grandmothers family, I found her uncle's WWII draft registration card. It listed his place of birth Sao Vincente, Cape Verde. My family never heard of this. We always thought that my grandmother came from Portugal. I can find no records of any kind for my grandmother. She and her two brothers are said to have come here(NY) in 1926 when she was 7. She was the oldest. Her name was Elvera Maria Lopez(s). Her brothers were Marcus and Tony. Her parents were Miguel Lopez(s)(who was said to have been a barber) and Frances DuPree who was said to have been mentally ill(which is why the 3 children were sent to NY). My grandmother's unlce in NY was Ralph Marcus Lopez. There were other uncle's, Tony maybe(Antonio)and Frank. Thanks

The records would be found at the Cambra de Brava, Cape verde. It is located in Villa, Brava. You would have to give them his name and approximate dates. Something to be mindful of is that if he did own land there it may have already have been passed down to other relatives. So if he had inherited the land from parents, he may have had siblings who would have had a share in the land as well. Since he never returned, it would have been passed to a relative or "taken over" by a new resident which happens a lot.
It is definitely worth a try to contact them. Be advised that it may take a long while before getting a response. I am still waiting on info and I was there personally to make the request in 2010

Remember, too, Cape Verde *was* a part of Portugal at that time. It didn't gain its independence from Portugal until 1975 when it became the Republic of Cape Verde. So naturally many of the people who lived in or came from CVI would identify as Portuguese and not necessarily Cape Verdean (although some seemed to .. maybe those with fewer ties to the continent?). Their passports would identify them as Portuguese citizens, just as someone from the Azores would. Same as someone born & raised in Hawaii would have a US passport and not a separate Hawaiian passport, or someone born & raised in Alaska has a US passport and not a Canadian passport. You get the idea. ;) Prior to 1975 someone from CVI's nationality was Portuguese regardless of the person's ancestry (Portuguese, British, Italian, African, etc.). So it's not really that it wasn't "acceptable" to say you were Cape Verdean prior to 1975, it was that Cape Verde was not an independent nation prior to that time. It's pretty cool, but it can also be very complicated when researching.

Re: Costa/DaCosta family search

Hi- My name is Anna and my family is also from Brava. I have been researching my family tree and I actually came across the birth certificate of an Alfredo born 2/20/1889 to Luiz Jose de Costa and Mathilde de Senna Costa. They lived in Thome Barraz in the parish of Nossa Senhora do Monte. His paternal grandparents were Felix Jose da Costa and Mathilde de Resurreicao and maternal grandparents were Filenio Pires and Eugenia de Senna. Filenio (Fileme) was a Pires and not a de Senna. The de Senna's were a well to do family in Nossa Senhora do Monte. Apparently, descendants kept the name regardless of marital status. This was done to keep identification with the family. I am also a descendant of the de Senna's. From the little I have been able to find about this family they are of Italian descent. If you go by their name, they would have been from (Senna) Tuscany. The Italians funded the Atlantic slave trade that made Cape Verde one of the richest areas of the world back then. I had a DNA test which showed that I am almost 70% Tuscan Italian and 30% West African so I think there may be some validity to their Italian origins. The furthest back I have been able to go is to Francisco Jose de Senna and his wife Mariana de Austria de Senna (1781-1883. I know they owned slaves which showed that they had some status. The Pires family from Thome Barraz, Chao di Soza and Mato Grande originated from Madeira.
I'm not sure if you were looking to go that far back or trying to get more information on Luiz and Mathilde's descendants but I hope this helps. Sorry for the history lesson, lol, but once I get started I usually can go on forever (according to my husband)

The Garthpool, a ship wreck of 11th November 1929 at Boavista, Cape Verde

Hello,
I wonder if anyone here can help me; I am working on research for a book about the story of a ship wreck, the loss of the four masted square rigged barque
Garthpool (formerly Juteopolis, built 1891) on 11th November 1929 off Ponta Reef, Boavista, Cape Verde.

All the crew survived; they stayed in life boats over night, were helped onto Cantow beach in the morning by the natives and spent 2 rough nights on the beach. They were taken to Sal Rei, had a proper meal and a nights sleeps and then they were taken on to Mindelo, St Vincent.

They stayed at Joao Oliveira's London Bar (I have found the bar was there up until at least 1946, maybe after that date; I'd love to know if anyone knows exactly where the bar was/if the building is still there!) and they were wined and dined by ex-pats and companies, namely Western Telegraph Co, Wilson's Coal co and the British Consul.
Eventually, after a couple of weeks, they were shipped home as Distressed British Seamen in late November.

(I also know in late spring/early summer 1932, the figurehead of the Garthpool was washed up and was elevated to the status of an idol & worshipped in a shrine on Boavista; I'd love to find out if the figurehead survived to this day, maybe in a bar or private house/hotel?)

Amongst the crew, was my great grandfather,
Christopher Bedford Steel (1907-1943), a passenger on board for the experience of the voyage.

I have so far collected a great variety of archives, articles/documents; I have a great growing photo/art collection and there's more to be discovered.

Does anyone here, maybe from the Cape Verde Islands, know about the Garthpool story or something about the locations/areas circa November 1929?

Any information would be most appreciated;

Also, I'm looking for anyone related to any of the crew; I've posted a full list here:
http://www.startedsailing.com/the-story-of-the-garthpool.htm

If you know anything about the Garthpool story, (& if you are related to the last crew/know someone who is) please email me at >>
garthpool(dot)project(at)gmail(dot)com

Also, I have a website, if you are interested in following my research; any feedback most appreciated, thanks!

www.thegarthpoolproject.webs.com

I looking forward to hearing from you,
All the best,
Bye for now,
Jessica

Probably you could find the pasenger lists through the Family History Center, Mormon website at www.familysearch.org. You can go there and search their catalog and bring in the microfilm to your local Family History Center Library. I'd recommend trying that. Or you could visit the website ITSG and see if they have a listing.

Also check in Rhode Island(Fox Point) and New Bedford Mass.lot of CV people here.Mormans have a huge database of people from all over the world.I think the website is Familysearch.org they also have local offices in most mayer cities where you can order micro film from their main Library in Utah.Try a google search to find.I also have some CV relatives and know they dont SPEAK portuguese they speak creole. We have a huge CV festival here in R.I and the President of CV even comes every year. The Azores is part of Portugal.Cape Verde are islands of the coast of Africka where the Portugese held slaves. Most Portugese people dont understand or speak Creole but most CV's understand portugese.Creole is a mix of african and portugese dialects.

Almost forgot- they apparently had some money or position because I also have several records of Matteus, etc with passports to other islands and internationally for their ships. The Cosme and Coelho families were also very well off and involved in govt., ship building and the Atlantic slave trade in general. The italians, ie Cosme's and de Senna, were instrumental in funding the trade.

The Gilmette were supposed to be of English or french heritage and Dos Reis were supposed to be "new christians" or Jewish converts. Converts tended to take names like dos Reis or Dossantos to show they're conversion.

Hope this helps.

Hello - Manuel dos Reis Gilmette (or gil dos Reis) was married to a Julia da Lomba Rosinha ( my great great x3 grandmother's sister). His parents were Joaquim dos Reis Gilmette and Casimira Cosme (she is also an ancestor of mine). They had a son name Artur. He had a brother, Matteus who married Estephania Engargiola (daughter of Francisco Engargiola and Matilda Coelho - a relative of mine). Manuel and Julia also had a son named Joaquim who was married but had a child with another woman, Rosa Dias, who had a daughter, Laura, who had a daughter, Rosa, who is married to my husband's father. I know that Artur had three sons- David, Arthur and John. I believe they live in Boston.
Another note- Casimira Cosme was the daughter of Antonio Cosme and Gertrudes dos Reis.
Manuel was definitely born around 1850-1855. He was in his 40's when his son Artur was born in the 1890's. I have copies of these actual records on my computer but have to go thru hundreds to find the exact ones. There was one Gilmette and one dos Reis family who intermarried a lot with each other a well as with the Cosme's. They lived primarily in Nossa Senhora do Monte (Tome Barraz and Pedra Molar).
Let me know if I can help with anything else. If this is the person you are looking for then it looks like we're cousins!

Hello Anna,
Thank you much for the response. I have recently made contact with a man in Massachusets who said he believes we may be related. Some of the names he passed on seem like viable relatives, but according to their birth dates, they don't quite match up with what I know to be true for my great grandfather, at least.
Do you have any contacts in Brava who could confirm whether Manuel Gil Dos Reis was born there in either 1850 or 1855, and that he was the son of ??? who was supposedly PortMaster there? Also whether he had any brothers or sisters?

Hello - My family ancestry is made up of many Gilmete- Dos Reis in Brava, Cape Verde. Many of these people shortened their name to Gil dos Reis or Gil Reis. They are ancestors on my maternal side and many of their direct descendants live in Massachusetts now. I believe that your ancestors descendants would have wound up in Brava as most of the Europeans tended to settle there. I have traced this portion of the family to about the mid 1800's. They weren't,however, servants. They were pretty well-to-do. They were amongst the earliest immigrants to the US, settling in places like Philadelphia, New Jersey and Boston. They isentified themselves as white, which correlates with them not being servants. I hope this help. Let me know if I can answer any other questions or help in any way. My email is alimaslp@yahoo.com

Anna M. Lima - Delgado

My father's name was P. Galvao dos Reis Borges--his mother's name was Maria Galvao, who I believe was the sister of John Galvao who came to the US and settled in CA. I had heard this story many years ago, and also that John changed his last name from Galvao to Galvas.
