Almost forgot- they apparently had some money or position because I also have several records of Matteus, etc with passports to other islands and internationally for their ships. The Cosme and Coelho families were also very well off and involved in govt., ship building and the Atlantic slave trade in general. The italians, ie Cosme's and de Senna, were instrumental in funding the trade.

The Gilmette were supposed to be of English or french heritage and Dos Reis were supposed to be "new christians" or Jewish converts. Converts tended to take names like dos Reis or Dossantos to show they're conversion.
