A few hints to make this new journey a little easier.

    1. Make sure you verify your post before committing to it. That includes spelling, punctuation, dates, names etc. Once it's posted, it's there forever.

    2. Since all the boards are now just one, be sure to enter a classification for your post using the pull down menu. Also it would benefit everyone to include a similar classification in the heading. If it is an obituary, choose the obituary class when posting and add the word "OBIT" to the subject heading. It will make it much easier to find in the new board system. Also include a date of the event. Just a year should be enough. A good example would be:

"SHIRER, JOHN OBIT 1930" or "JOHN SHIRER OBIT 1930".

  • 3. The new boards include the ability to include an attachment. This would be great for sharing photographs and images of wills and other documents. Ancestry is touting this as a way of sharing Gedcom's but realize that Gedcoms change and submitting one using this feature will lock that Gedcom in time and if the data has changed since submitting it as an attachment, it will be there for future researchers who are going to assume it is correct. PLEASE DON'T INCLUDE GEDCOMS! That is unless you are absolutely sure it is 100% correct and will never change and how often can you say that? If attaching photos of people, please include the word "PHOTO" in the subject heading as there is no classification yet for that and it will make it easier to find.

    4. Please no profanity or personal messages. If you want to contact someone off the boards, their email address is available. If you cannot contact them by that email address, please contact me instead of posting a message. I have contacts with more Shirer researchers than anyone else so chances are I know how to get in touch with them.

    5. Sharing our information is what it is all about. Use the boards freely for that purpose. It doesn't matter what side of the family you are on or how you spell your name. If you think you could be a Shirer, we welcome you to post your data here. Some known variants are Scheurer, Sheirer, Shirar, Shirey and Shearer.

    6. The messages here will also be sent to the SHIRER-L mailing list. If you want to respond to a message that was sent from this board to the mailing list, do so here and not on the list as the original poster may not be a member of the list.

Enjoy and good luck with your research!
