I am the Administrator of this Board.
My duties include keeping the Boards in good order
according to the rules set up by rootsweb.com and ancestry.com
My hope is that we can help one another by sharing records, stories and information.
The following tips may help you to post messages on these Boards:
Hints on posting messages
- Name: Your name (preferably your real name, not a "screen name")
- E-Mail: Give your e-mail address, so others may contact you. If you change your email, remember to change your old posts. Information on how can be found in the Help area.
- Subject: Give a clear, concise description of the message's content; a good subject-line contains who, where, and when. This increases your chances of a response. Readers browse subject lines. Subjects of "Help" or "Help Please" are often skipped over by readers because it gives no information on who, where and when.
For example: LANE, Rev. Daniel in Washington Co PA 1810 to 1887
- Message: The main body of your post goes here. Capitalize surnames (example LANE rather than Lane.) Use abbreviations sparingly. It is a good idea to make "who, what, where, and when" very clear. Repeat full names inside the message; others won't know "Aunt Margie." Include city, county, and state for location.
- Classification: Choose the one that best describes the content of your message. Look through the drop-down menu. Records should be put in the right classification.
- Surnames: Type all surnames included in your message, separated by a comma. ONLY the surnames IN your message should go here. On Mailing Lists you might put "all" surnames you are looking for, but the "Surname Field" on Message Boards is ONLY for surnames that are inside your posted message.
For example: if your message contains these names, they go in the surname field, like this::
Lane, Bail, Garber
- Words in the Surname field act as keywords for a GLOBAL search of ALL
boards. But you can search just that one board, searching the entire content of all messages posted to the board, regardless of what is or is not in the Surname field. Which search you get -- global or "this board only" -- depends on which radiobutton you choose when you search. You can search on the SURNAME FIELD ONLY on a single board level using the ADVANCED SEARCH link and then selecting the single board to be searched and specifying that you want the surname field searched for your keyword/name.
