Guidelines & Tips for Posting to the Message Board
There are alot of people who scan over the message board posts even though the search is available
to them and also if the board is gatewayed to the corresponding mailing list this makes your subject
doubly important.
1. On a surname message board NEVER use just the surname as the subject of your post--after all, that is already the title of the message board itself.
Ex. of a good subject: Wm. Green Cook of Bedford Co. TN
Ex. of a poor subject: Cook
2. You want to use locations dates and given names along with the surnames in a post if at all possible.
Ex of a good subject: Acuff & McElroy marriage 1871 Van Buren Co. TN
Ex. of a poor subject: Help I can't find more info
Ex of a poor subject: Looking for my ancestors/gr gr grandpa
3. The Surname box of your posting should include only surnames mentioned in your actual post. Failure to comply will result in the names in the surname box being edited to maintain the integrity of the indexing system
4. Make sure that your posting is best suited for the particular surname board you are posting on.
For example lets say you have a Jane King who was the grand daughter of a Charles Moore. You
wouldn't post Descendents of Jane King on the Moore Board. If you placed a post about your Jane King
on a Moore Message board you would do better to work back to the Moore connection by listing ancestors
of Jane King......not descendants.
5. Should you have new info.....you can post a reply to your own query so that the readers are updated on
your research
Your post could be deleted for any of the following reasons.
1. Failure to mention the connection to this surname.
2. Posts containing items for sale
3. Posts which are spam, foul language or flames.
4. Posts which violate copyright.
5. Posting vital statistics on living individual such as full birthdates etc. These posts are acceptable on Adoption Board...please place post of that nature there.
Classification of your Post
The please note that if you are posting a question....you should select query. The remaining boards
with the exception of Lookup are Data Boards and should only have copies of Census, Obits , Wills
etc. listed under their classification. For example, a query about a will is still a query. The
classification wills should not be selected for that post. Please see the explanations for each Classification below.
