The Darling Downs is a fertile agricultural region. It includes the local government areas of Cambooya, Chinchilla, Clifton, Crows Nest, Dalby, Goondiwindi, Inglewood, Jondaryan, Millmerran, Murilla, Pittsworth, Rosalie, Stanthorpe, Tara, Taroom, Toowoomba, Waggamba, Wambo and Warwick.
Far North & North West
The Far North and North West Counties are separate regions, merged purely for coordinating convenience. ..................................
The Far North region covers most of Cape York Peninsula and stretches to the Torres Strait at the northern most part of the State. The main population and administrative centre of the region is located in Cairns. Other key population centres include Cooktown, Douglas, Eacham, Etheridge, Mareeba, Johnstone, Cardwell, Croydon, Herberton, the Atherton Tableland, Weipa and the Torres Strait Islands. The area also includes several Aboriginal and Islander communities including Aurukun, Badu, Bamaga, Boigu, Dauan, Erub, Hammond, Hope Vale, Iama, Injinoo, Kubin, Lockhart River, Mabuiag, Mapoon, Mer, Napranum, New Mapoon, Pompuraaw, Poruma, Saibai, Seisia, St Pauls, Ugar, Umagico, Warraber, Wujal Wujal, Yarrabah and Yorke. ..............................................
The North West region is located along the Gulf of Carpentaria and is dominated by the Mount Isa Mines which extracts zinc, copper, silver and lead. The terrain is mostly arid or savannah country and is bordered in the west by the Northern Territory. The major city in the region is Mount Isa, whilst other local areas include Burke, Carpentaria, Cloncurry, Flinders, Kowanyama, McKinlay, Richmond and the Aboriginal communities of Doomadgee and Mornington Island. ...................................
The Fitzroy region, often referred to as Central Queensland, is heavily dominated by coal mining, and cattle grazing. Banana, Bauhinia, Calliope, Duaringa, Emerald, Fitzroy, Gladstone, Jericho, Livingstone, Mount Morgan, Peak Downs, Rockhampton and the Aboriginal community of Woorabinda are the local government areas.............................................
The Mackay region is centred on the coastal city of Mackay and extends some 300km inland. It contains the Whitsunday Islands group and the towns of Belyando, Bowen, Broadsound, Mirani, Nebo, Proserpine and Sarina. The coastal areas are densely covered in sugar cane farms, while the less densely populated inland areas have several mining communities...........................................................................
Northern
The area commonly known as North Queensland is a coastal region centred around the twin cities of Townsville and Thuringowa. Townsville is an Australian Army defence base and the location of a major seaport handling exports from mines in Mount Isa and cattle exports from coastal and inland areas. The region also contains a bulk sugar exporting terminal at Lucinda in the region's north. South East Queensland (SEQ) is commonly considered to be a single region. It contains two statistical regions Brisbane and Moreton; and contains approximately two-thirds of the state's population. Covering 22,420 square kilometres and incorporating 1(Local Coordinator: Apply Now) Local Government Areas, the region extends 240 km from Noosa in the north to the Gold Coast and New South Wales border in the south (some sources include Tweed Heads (NSW) which is contiguous as an urban area with Brisbane/Gold Coast)...........................................................................................
The Brisbane region is comprised of the greater Brisbane metropolitan area, including the Brisbane, Beaudesert, Boonah, Caboolture, Gold Coast City (part), Ipswich City (part), Logan City, Pine Rivers, Redcliffe and Redland. The Moreton Region contains the areas not within the Brisbane metropolitan region such as Noosa, Caloundra and Maroochy on the Sunshine Coast; and the western parts of Ipswich such as Laidley and Gatton in the west, and Esk and Kilcoy in the north...................................................................
The South West region of Queensland borders the states of New South Wales, South Australia and the Northern Territory. It is sparsely populated and contains the towns of Roma, Cunnamulla and Birdsville. The town of Birdsville, near the South Australian border is a popular tourist stop on the Birdsville Track, a four wheel drive route through the Strzelecki Desert. Other local areas in this region include Balonne, Bendemere, Booringa, Bulloo, Bungil, Murweh, Paroo, Quilpie and Waroo. ..............................................................
Wide Bay-Burnett
Local government areas within the Wide Bay Burnett region include Biggenden, Bundaberg, Burnett, Cooloola, Eidsvold, Gayndah, Hervey Bay, Isis, Kilkivan, Kingaroy, Kolan, Miriam Vale, Maryborough, Monto, Mundubbera, Murgon, Nanango, Perry, Tiaro, Wondai and Woocoo. It also contains Fraser Island a popular tourist destination and world's largest sand island; as well as the Aboriginal community of Cherbourg. The region borders the Sunshine Coast to the south and the Fitzroy region to the north. .................................................
