This Board is for anyone researching the island of ST. CROIX in what is now the US Virgin Islands.
This Board can be a valuable resource for all ST. CROIX researchers.
Check this Announcements page periodically, and post messages on this Board frequently!
TIPS ON POSTING MESSAGES:
Certain features of the Message Boards are designed to work within the site's indexing system, or search engine. Knowing how to properly post messages and use these features will enable more users (researchers like yourself) to find your message, which increases the possibility of connecting with someone who may also have information on your ancestors. Understanding and utilizing the following TIPS just may help you break down your genealogical brick wall, or locate kin.
SURNAMES. When you are writing your message, be sure to list the surnames that pertain to your message in the "Surnames" box (field). The Surname field is a very important part of the entire site's search engine. It enables other researchers to find your messages when they search by surname. IMPORTANT: If you are listing more than one surname in this field, you MUST separate each one with a comma, NOT a slash, NOT a hyphen, NOT just a space, NOT an ampersand or plus sign. If you do not use a comma, the search engine will not know how to separate the names in your list, because many surnames properly contain spaces, periods, hyphens, etc. IMPORTANT: No other text should go in the Surname field! It is for surnames (with any necessary punctuation, eg. "St. Michel") with ONLY commas as separators! Do not write any other phrases, such as explanations of where or when they were born, in the Surname field. Also~ please remember that, in the Surname field for each message you write, you MUST list ONLY the names you are mentioning in the particular message you are writing at the moment. DO NOT list every single surname you are researching (unless each one is actually in that specific message!). The search engine's indexing system depends on the surname field being filled in properly.
CLASSIFICATIONS. Give your message a Classification. This also helps other users locate information relevant to their research. For example, if you are posting the text of an obituary, classify it as "Obituary;" if submitting the transcription of a tombstone, classify it as "Cemetery;" if posting a query, classify it as "Query;" if requesting a Look-up, classify it as "Lookup." The Classifications are: Query, Bible, Biography, Birth, Cemetery, Census, Death, Deed, Immigration, Lookup, Marriage, Military, Obituary, Pension, and Will. Take a look at the pull-down list where it says, "View Messages By..." and you'll see all the Classifications. You can "sort" how you view messages on any board by using this handy tool. Of course, you can also view all messages on a board by using the "All Messages" function. You can also search by Classification when using the Advanced Search (click on the "Advanced Search" link).
CAPITALIZATION. It is generally a good idea to capitalize any surnames and/or place names in your post. Doing so also helps readers quickly see the focus of the message. DO NOT capitalize your entire message -- it makes it hard to read and, according to internet etiquette ("netiquette"), is considered the same as "shouting." Capitalizing just your surnames or place names -- rather than every word -- makes specific genealogical details stand out from the rest of your message.
SEARCHING FOR LIVING INDIVIDUALS. Unless genealogical in nature, any messages requesting help in locating lost family members or friends will be moved to the appropriate Message Board called, 'Lost Family and Friends,' which can be found at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=topics.lost-family-and-friends (or by using the Board heirarchy of Boards > Topics > Lost Family and Friends). That is where such messages should be posted. Thanks for your cooperation in only posting messages here that relate to ST. CROIX genealogy.
