| OJ must not be paying attention, or he'd point out that Thrift Rd, Garfield, Jenkins Co, GA is not really in Garfield. It takes off from Elam Rd in the northeast part of the outskirts of Garfield, and turns north northeast. The point where it intersects Highway 23 is a place called Thrift, GA, so small that google maps can't even find it, unless you zero in on it yourself. In Luther Thrift's 1989 book, The Thrifts of Okefinokee, it is mentioned. Shortly after Robert Thomas Thrift's death in 1837, his children moved from Washington County in Georgia to Tattnall County. During their migration they "settled for a short time (probably less than a year) in an area that became known as Thrift, Georgia. In later years, the building of a railroad through the area kept the name alive. Today, Thrift, GA is in present Jenkins County between Garfield and Millen on State Hiway 23." Richard |
