James Madison Carter's parents were James Madison Carter, Sr. and Frances Coates. He had a first wife named Nancy Mason (may be Meason) who was from S.C. They moved from GA to Miss. around 1857 and Nancy may have died on the way. They went from there to Lousiana and then on to Texas. The 1870 census shows JMC, Sr. as born in S.C. I have unclear info on JMC's brothers and sisters. There are: Mary Lavinia, Nancy L., Sarah S., Carol L., Benjamin, David Louis, Robert and Frances. There may be more.
