I had a relative that died in 2006 and I went with family to the funeral home. The funeral director when asked about notifying Social Security about the death, they made the statement anyone can inform the SSA of a death but would need to submit a copy of the death certificate to start any benefits. They included that all mortuaries and funeral homes were now required to notify the SSA of the death of any person with a SSN, regardless of age. The relative was under 50 years of age and not receiving any SSA benefits, nor had any family eligible to claim survivors death benefits. My relative is in the SSDI. You can call the 800 # for the SSA and make an inquiry. Since you are her niece and she had no children then you are her next of kin to receive information. You may have to prove it with your and your parent, (aunt's sibling) birth certificates first though.

She might be listed under a nick name (like Peggy for Margaret) or middle name. There can be a spelling error transcription of the last name. Search the SSDI with using only her last name, date of birth and month and year of death.

Check with the Family or Probate Court in the county she lived in, if there was a will it should have been probated. Order a copy of her death certificate and if she owned her own home check on the status of the deed, if it has been probated, or sold or just had an ownership change. If it is still in her name then, you may need to contact a lawyer or even the local district attorney.

Actually if you know her street address you can use Zillow or Trulia real estate websites to see if they have any information as to last year sold, estimated worth etc. If it changed ownership in the last 2 years then I believe there should be that information.
Also some county websites have Assessor's information online one can access with address. Different county programs have different information it posts.

Use social media to see if the "old friend" has an online presence and what they maybe up to.
