The Indian Mutiny medal roll has a #209 Sergeant Ronald McDonald of the 3rd Madras Fusiliers awarded a Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India. They dropped 'European' in 1858-59. Before then they came under the East India Company. In 1861 they were renamed - 108th Regiment of Foot.

He may have left because of these changes, rather than deserted. The National Archives has information starting 1863. Before then you need to contact fibis.org as they may have his service record.
