Hi David - I've tried several times to reply to your query, but I don't think any of my replies went through. If you received them, great, but if you didn't, I'll give it another try. Here goes...

It sounds like we are long lost cousins -
James Woodson McDonald and his wife Martha were my Great-Great Grandparents. James Pierce and Ola (Sarah Viola McDonald/Greene) were my Great Grandparents (I knew Ola). James Pierce and Ola had four boys and a girl (Raymond- born February 3,1902, he was my Grandfather, James L., Jack Pierce - born June 17, 1921, William (Will or Bill) born November 22, 1914, and Mary L. McDonald/Clements, born September 10, 1904.

I couldn't find James L. McDonald's DOB, but I know his daughter Dorothy, so I'll get it from her. James L. died in 1957 in a freak accident where a tractor fell off a hauling trailer and crushed him to death in the mountains above Pecos, NM along the Pecos River at the Holy Ghost Bridge (I've fished right there many, many times).

It's true that James Pierce was a cattle inspector, but earlier in his life he was the Head Foreman of the XIT Ranch - the largest ranch under fence in the world with over 3,000 miles of fence. I know volumes about the ranch, if you're not familiar with the XIT. I know much about the family, too, should you wish to know more.

FYI - James Pierce died after he fell into a cattle dip and it poisoned him - not sure of the year. Ola lived to be 95 and spent much of her later life living close to her daughter Mary Clements (husband Isaac) in Folsom, NM near Raton - she also lived in Albuquerque, NM. William spent much of his life in Clovis, NM and he passed away in May of 2006. Jack Pierce spent much of his life in Denver, CO and Helena MT - he died in Santa Fe, NM - he was 88 and was one amazing man. Raymond lived in Albuquerque, NM and he died in 1980. Mary Clements/McDonald lived in Folsom, NM and died in October 1992.

Fun Fact - James Pierce and Ola were related to Jim White who discovered Carlsbad Caverns. Jim White lived off the sales of bat guana from the caverns, which made great fertilizer. Later he sold the guana to the Mexicans who used it to make gunpowder during the Mexican/American War - crazy, huh?

Well, that's all for now. I have lots of information on the family and would be happy to share it with you. Please, tell me how you're related. Feel free to contact me anytime at gmcdonald303@msn.com. Oh, James Pierce McDonald did have a brother, W. Homer McDonald. I have pictures and stories from Ola and others I'd love to share. The headquarters/house of the Las Escarbadas Division of the XIT Ranch is where all these folks lived. It has been donated to the National Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock / the house was taken down and rebuilt there - it is run by Texas Tech University.

I look forward to hearing from you.

May God Bless,

Gregory "Mac" McDonald
