ZACHARY T. HERNDON, clerk of the Meade County Circuit Court, was born in Owen County, Ky., in 1847. His grandfather, Joel Herndon, came from Virginia to Kentucky in an early day, and settled first in Scott County, where was born David Herndon, the father of Zachary T. The family afterward removed to Owen County, where Joel Herndon died in 1855, and where David married Miss Elizabeth Vallandingham, a daughter of John Vallandigham, and a cousin of the Hon. C. L. Vallandigham, of Ohio. David Herndon had a family of two children, viz.: Elizabeth, wife of J. N. Porter, of Ballard County, Ky., and Zachary T. (subject), who was but a few weeks old when his father died. His mother contracted a second marriage and moved to Illinois, where she died. Zachary T., when about five years old, became the protégé of his uncle, F. H. Kean, of Louisville, by whom he was reared and educated. He acquired a proficiency in the science of civil engineering, and for about fifteen years found lucrative employment in the service of the Louisville & Nashville Railway Company, and other corporations. In January, 1870, he went to Meade County and purchased an interest in a flouring mill, which business engaged his attention until August, 1880, when he was elected to the office he now holds. Mr. Herndon is a cultured gentleman of literary tastes, and is establishing a library of standard literary merit. He was married in Breckinridge County February 1, 1872, to Miss Martha M., daughter of John and Malinda (Beard) Hardin, and has a family of three children, viz.: Eva M.; Maud and John C. Herndon.
