Death Certs are tricky as by law, they are filed in the state the person died, regardless of where they lived. So, as an example, if you are on a vaction and you died while at the Grand Canyon and you live in NY, guess where your death certificate is - not NY!

Also, the state of IL did not keep state records of death certifates until 1916. Before that time, you would have to check the county where the death occured.

In Massac County, being it in so close (across the river from KY) you may also try there - KY.

Each state began keeping records as dictated by that states statues, meaning all states are different. Church records are a pretty good source.
