MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Robert Edward (Doc) Wall, 76, of Mount Airy, passed away Monday, April 28, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Wall was born May 18, 1931, in Surry County, the son of the late Duke and Gellean Taylor Wall. Mr. Wall was a golf pro in Plant City, Fla. for 10 years before returning to Mount Airy Country Club in 1976, where he served as golf pro for 20 years. He was a former player for the Graniteers professional baseball team, and was inducted into the Mount Airy Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. Mr. Wall was a veteran of the United States Army and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are his wife, Mary Nell Wall of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Wes and Tammy Wall of Bermuda Run; two step grandchildren, Brittany Jones and Richard Jones III both of Bermuda Run; and a sister, Shirley Tillotson of Mount Airy. The funeral services will be held Wednesday at the Flat Rock Baptist Church, and burial will follow in the Oakdale Cemetery with the gravesite rites conducted by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 6436.
